after "asking jeeves" to search "triathlon training" for me, beginnertrathlete.com was the clear winner! i've been reading like crazy for the past month every article for beginners, training tips, etc, getting ready for my first triathlon Oct 2, 2005, Ko'Olina Sprint, Hawaii. I don't know what got me excited about "tri'ing" other than I started getting in more run time and just kind of jumped in. I'm a 43 yr old father of twenty-two month old twins (boy and a girl), have always kept in good shape.........so now all of a sudden, i just wanted to step it up a notch. my only competition for my first Tri will be me. My goal for this event is simply not getting the DNF beside my name. if i get hooked, i'll get more serious about getting off my 10 yr old sears $120 mountain bike and into a better cycle, and maybe some master's swimming / coaching. i can make the swim, but i'm not fast. wish me luck......... Mr. Twins

Welcome! You made a great choice as the best tri forum but you probably got to lay off those frys (You probably put down the nuggets and frys for the picture)

I was very similar to you when I started. Rode my MTB for my first sprint and then an international distance tri, then opted to buy a tri bike when I figured I was serious. I also had the same thinking as you as I was only racing myself and hoped not to DNF (which I luckily didn't).

Welcome Mark. A word of advice: start planning now for the bike. You're gonna get hooked. And the kids are adorable.

Just another week for your first Tri....are you excited?

Welcome to BT...you'll learn a lot here and make some great tri friends.

We have 16 year old twins...I remember when they were that age. Your kids are very cute!!

You may want to post on the who's racing forum to see if any other BTers are going to be at your Tri. It is great to meet up with someone before to talk and for me helps me stay calm. Here in MA we have a whole group and normally see some other BTers at our races...it is great fun!

Have fun next weekend!

I did it!! Much better than I thought. I met my goal of NO DNF, then my conservative goal of under 3 hrs. Finished 211 of 324 overall in 2:10:42. Still need a lot of work on the swim stroke efficiency, upgrade from the 10 yr old $120 mountain bike and I'll do better. Very excited about my next Tri on 30 Oct, North Shore Oahu Haliewa Sprint. Thanks to all who've posted for your support. If you've been reading this thread, I may have to give McDonalds some credit for the mcnuggets and french fries FUEL........ and I was saying they were for the twins. Aloha and Mahalo from Hawaii.

Congrats dude!

Its great to see them having more races out there. Unfortunately when I lived out there the race calendar was rather thin ( I guess the logistics were to hard). Where are they doing the swim at Haleiwa? Surf should be up by then.

Welcome and congrats! Hooked yet? After my first sprint this summer, i'm already trying to budget a bike and organize next year's race calendar . Good luck with everything - - I'm sure you'll find this site (if you haven't already done so) and its members very helpful and friendly.

Brett,

Aloha and Mahalo.......I feel like a real triathlete now, a reply from THE coach. The north shore 6th annual Haliewa Sprint ad says a "safe, fast 400 yd swin course inside of Puaena Point." I'm only swimming 1 to 1.3 mph in the open water, so I'm hoping for little or no current and no surf, otherwise I'll be having to put out too much....... I can do it, just don't want to be worn out for the bike and run. I'm going to work on the swim technique this weekend at a Rowdy Gains hosted swim clinic at the Oahu Club. That'll probably be the best $15 I could spend. Thanks again for the support and reply.

LT, I don't know if I'm hooked yet or not, but I do know that I'll have to invest in some real wheels for the biking. That was my weakest point. Even though I still managed almost 18 mph for 18.6 miles and Oahu tradewinds....... I could sure benefit from a lighter race bike. Thanks for dropping the lines and support.
