Tonight I had my left crank arm come off while riding.  Kind of scary when you're doing 24+ trying to run down a group and all of a sudden your crank arm and pedal are dangling from your cleat!

Anyway, my question is, do you think doing a flying mount from the left side could lead to this happening?  During my races and BRICKS, I always jump on and off of my bike from the left side.

No-The pic doesn't show real clearly on my machine but I'm thinking it had come lose or some other failure, not the flying mounts unless you have some super human strength.

Im by no means a bike mechanic but it looks like there is a piece missing. What i mean is shouldnt the crank clamp onto something?

The pinch bolts possibly weren't tight enough.  That can happen over time, or due to not being tightened enough when the bike was built.

Yeah, like maybe a bottom bracket spindle?  I haven't worked on these new fangled bikes, been a few years since i've been a wrench turner... but ummm.... yeah, kinda need one of those.

Ok, you guys got me, the right side pedal assembly slid to the right, leaving the end of the crank shaft inside the bottom bracket.  (And to think, a year ago I didn't know what any of those parts were!)

Two things:* The pinch bolts (I know the Gossamer cranks I have on a few bikes have two) were loose.*The bolt that threads into the BB spindle on that side is missing. This prevents the crankarm from falling off if the pinch bolts are loose.looser

This is why you should always use a torque wrench and periodically check that everything is still torqued down to proper value.
