well ive heard of insane races such as the double, triple, quintuple and even deca ironman races. two things comes into mind

one: how do you train for such races and is there anyway you can be even fully prepared especially for the batshit insane deca race

two: do these people have lives outside of triathlon and a job, seems quite time consuming! (please note my case of sarcasm)

Haha. Well I finished my first double IM this year (in 26 hours) and really didn't train all that much. I definitely didn't train as much or as hard as I trained for my hawaii IM qualifier.

It's my motto that once you have a good base, you do just about anything you want. You still have to do the occasional stupid long workout or race.

To maintain my base, I just run about 50-80 miles a week and every once in awhile run 50-100 miles in one day.

HERE's a link to my double RR if you're interested.

I coach an ultra athlete and she usually works out 25-30 hours for peak training weeks. I have had her do 8-10 hour bike rides in order to prepare for the 224 miles of the double IM.

my best guess to training for such races is to get used to being in each discipline for hours on end, sleep deprive yourself ever so often to get used to being up. for a double 10 hour rides and 4-5 hour runs would do great. swimming i wouldnt see it as too hard to train, jumping to 2.5-3 hours doesnt seem terribly difficult. it seems that one must know suffering to be able to prepare.

Read your blog-thing. That's a damn good finish time for a double.
