Subject: Completed first HM this am!!

So as the title says, I completed my first half marathon this morning and it went better than I could have ever imagined.  My initial goal was to finish under 1:45 but due to other responsibilities and getting sick a couple weeks back, I wasn't able to train as much as I would have liked.  With that in mind, I kinda pushed my goal back to 2hr flat.  During most of my training runs, I was averaging about 8:15min/mile, but thought the lack of training might push me closer to 9m/mi.  Obviously, I was going to push to go faster than that, but under 2hr and I would have been happy.

Well the race starts at a perfect 48oF and I'm feeling pretty good, going at about a 7:50 pace, thinking I would probably slow down a couple miles in, settle in to around 8:15 and then try to hang on for as long as possible.  Well somehow, and don't ask me how, I never felt the need to slow down from my starting pace.  Ended up finishing in 1:41:13 at a 7:44 pace.  I was ecstatic!

Now I just hope this wasn't beginner's luck, but I've got another coming up in March, so we'll see...  Anyways, just wanted to share my race experience with other BT's.  Even the muscle pain I'm experiencing right now cant wipe the smile off my face!  Hope everyone else is having a good Saturday!  Thanks to everyone who posts here as well, for all the valuable information you provide.

Awesome stuff!  Sounds like March will be a good time to break into the 1:3xs  I'm chomping at the bit waiting for my first half of the season, Vegas RnR.

Congrats, now don't be like me.  My first half (first race ever)was RnR Mardi Gras and I ran exactly 1;41 like you did, and managed a 1:46 at Jazz Half.  I ran a marathon pretty recently...but get faster, not slower like me!

Great job!

Wooot!   Nice work man!  Congratulations!  My first HM is happening in January with a similar time goal, but more on the mid to upper 1:40s at my current fitness level.  Did you take an ice bath? =)

That is a very respectable time.  I think you should be very well pleased with yourself.

That was faster than my first HM.  I came in at 1:47:16 for that one.

Good job!

Ha!  I did a 1:41 at my first HM... 1 year ago.  FWIW, I ran a 3:36 marathon based on that time, just two months later...

so you know what I'm suggesting.  Time to sign up for a full.  you've got it in those legs, just waiting to break out if you let it.

Also- I love that you said, this was your 'first' HM... as it implies they'll be many more.

keep on runnin'!

kloofyroland - 2011-10-30 2:57 AM Wooot!   Nice work man!  Congratulations!  My first HM is happening in January with a similar time goal, but more on the mid to upper 1:40s at my current fitness level.  Did you take an ice bath? =)

I did take an ice bath, and I can say without a doubt that it helped.  After the race, I could feel my legs starting to cramp up so I went for a really short jog, then stretched as much as I could.  I took in some of the post-race activities then headed home.  After the 20min drive I felt like I was going to fall out of the car.  I took the dog for about a 1mi walk, for me and her!, and then sank into an ice bath.

The next day, I really wasn't too sore at all, which surprised me.  The worst pain was coming from the top of my right foot, about halfway up, over my big toe.  Anyone else ever experienced this???  This was a first for me, but it was actually pretty painful.  Ive been icing my knees and feet 3x20min and I think I'm about ready to go for some short runs again.

As for the poster that asked about a full, there's definitely one in my future, just not anytime soon.  I'm signed up for the NOLA 70.3 in April and want to dedicate more time to swimming and cycling over the winter.  I'll have to report back how that goes once completed (i hope).

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!
