Any truth to the rumor the the 2012 Washington Half will be July 28th with the Oly and Sprint, or on July 29th by itself?

I think participation would go way up by moving the date away from B2B and providing a Half option in Late July (or early August).  Currently there aren't any around that time in the Carolinas.

Something we are throwing around right now. This year was very hot though but doing it in one weekend makes a lot of sense for us. If we did the race in Washington Park in late May (just throwing it out) it may even be wetsuit legal, in July, most likely not. What are your thoughts?

Late May may not be as bad, you could still have a hot streak as White Lake has had but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as July.

Late May would be sweet!!  I have had a good time at every race I have raced or volunteered at with FS Series.  Even with the crappy weather I still had a blast Saturday.

How about Late June?  Not as hot as late July, but still gives some distance from White Lake in May.

The biggest thing is we have some events set in stone in June that we won't move. Plus June is the month they do the festival in Washington so we'd probably stay away from that.

Any chance of getting permission to run across the dam at Buckhorn? I think that race is already great, but that could make the run more interesting (it's not a bad run now). You might also have the option of a sprint/oly combination out there.

I can't figure out why it's not a more popular race. My wife loves watching there for some reason (although she wished the bouncy house was there). She also likes watching at White Lake, but I think racing Buckhorn is much nicer. Maybe running on the dam would add some interest. Those huge ants make me a little nervous, they look big enough that they could reach up and drag me to the ground.

As for overall schedule, just looking at my personal planning, I'm heavy on choices for May and June, but light on August and September.

ETA: Looking at the map, not really accross the dam, but out on the dirt road out on/to it. Past the circle we turn around in now.

I think moving the Washington Half to another date would be great but worry about end July. I did the OLY this year in Washington and, as you know, it was a sauna. Doubling the distances would be very challenging in the heat and humidity but some people do like that (I'm not one of them- grin). What about Sept for people wanting a late season IM tune-up? As someone said, you can get a heatwave almost any time around here, but it is almost guaranteed to be hot in July...but is usually nice in Sept. Just to throw another option out, have you considered May for an HIM? White Lake is back to one weekend so might not have enough space (?) and although a lot of people like it, I have done it twice and have no great desire to ever do WL again. Another HIM option in May would be really nice and Washington is SO much nicer a venue than WL, IMHO. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I am exited to see the rest of the schedule.

ETA: My comments about planning a HIM early in the season: although you would be competing with White Lake, I am still somewhat baffled that WL is as popular as it is. I have a sense that it is really the only HIM option early in the season and lots of people are chomping at the bit to get their season started with a bang. I think a Washington option would be a very attractive alternative. If you get enough people who think like me then you have a winner :-)

I agree that WL is probably only popular because there aren't a ton of options for HIM in May.  I have no desire to go back to WL as a spectator or participant and I think the only good thing about that race is the swim, which I think is kinda overrated. Accommodations are pitiful and restaurants are limited.  At least in Washington there is decent lodging and a variety of places to eat within reasonable driving distance.

I vote for late May, I may even come out of semi retirement for it lol

Sorry, I missed the reason for moving it to begin with.  So with the OBX Half in late September, I would try to make the Washington Half an early season race.  The WL Half is in early May, so what about late May?  I agree with those who have said it would be nice to have a choice for an early season half.

Honestly I wouldn't change a thing.  Except for the wind, I loved everything about this weekends race.  Thanks FS !
