Overall Rank = 267/350
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 41/42
Pre-race routine:

Scoped the course out the evening before w/ isis. Hard to follow arrows in the dark but it worked. Spent the night w/ the Captain Jack Sparrow and lovely Mrs. Capt. Sparrow at their palacious estate. (many apologies for being a tardy guest extended). Got a short (4 hrs) but sssoo restful sleep before the RISE AND SHINE at 0330 hrs on deck. Nice am with the Sparrows (such a wonderful couple). Got to the race site w/ plenty of time w/ helped the race nerves. Got to chit chat w/. fellow BTers, got body marked and set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Tried some sprints to alleive the hip pain I was having from the long run a few days ago. Really pissed me off that it was still there and was going to drag me down on my last race. Wanted to bust this one open. oh well.

Race started late and thanks goodness for KathyG who goosed us all along since we all got to the swim just as the first wave started. Got in a little swim to warm up. Water was warm, bottom conditions were sandy and no weeds, beach sand was good, minor shells and stones. Perfect.

Swim
  • 16m 33s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Happy with the swim. Out of the water time was 15 mins. Fastest time so far this year for me and felt very comfortable w/ the sea state. Got into a rythm right away, got in a consistant kick, good navigation.

Distance to T-1 was a bit long but ok.

What would you do differently?:

nothing. Great end to the season.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Good t-1 time. (177 ranked out of 350) I'll take it. Smooth, but could have been smoother. Decided to go shirtless and that saved a few seconds.
Bike
  • 50m 40s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 15.99 mile/hr
Comments:

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!! Flat tire at mile 5 ish. Actually a bad valve that caused a slow leak and the whole operation went FUBAR. (should have listened to the cptn. and changed it first thing) OH well, I was prepared and did the deed. Got back on track and figured it was a message to enjoy the race.

actual bike time was 41 min, which averages to 19.7 mph just shy of my goal mph of 20,and happy w/ that.
What would you do differently?:

LOL..not get a flat
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

ach...too long in t-2. Should have been a min. less but got screwed up finding where my rack was. The RD didnt have numbers on the racks so took a bit of searching. Bt singlet on, visor on, shades on, slid socks and sneakers on and out the door.

rank 339/350
What would you do differently?:

In this case, I should have marked my place or remembered how many racks to mine. My bad.
Run
  • 34m 53s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

well, right off in t-2 I knew the hip was gonna be a problem. Left calf was tight too but not too worried about that. Plus the flat issue was screwing up my psyche. Typical for me to have negative thoughts on the run.

Gimped along for 2 miles enjoying the ocean view. Told myself that the only way out was thru the run and that meant a faster pace which has helped the hip in the past. SSSOOOO..turned it up a notch and felt better. Hip went away and calf too.

What would you do differently?:

well, not do anymore slow runs in training.
Post race
Warm down:

So very nice to cross the line and have a slew of well wishers there!!!! Max and Rob were already in.
Had a blast cheering in Isis and KathyG. and chit chattting about the race.

Race group provided a super gathering after. Burgers, dogs, beer, soda, cookies, etc. in a shady area.

Hung out and saw Isis get her first place award!!! That was the coolest. (living vicariously thru her win as I doubt I will ever see one)

Have lots of pics once I get the filmm developed and will post them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

flat and hip pain. Persisted thru them both so I grew and became stronger.

Event comments:

Great short, local tri. Only beef really is that they should mark the racks w/ race numbers.

Glen,

It was a pleasure having you stay with us and we hope you can do it again for the Htfd 1/2 Mary! No worries on the arrival time, I got a good hour in on the sofa before you got there.

Sorry to hear about the tube and hip but, regardless of the pain in the butt and pain in the hip , you cut some nice times. If you hadn't had those problems, you would have been standing with Mark and Max cheering me in!

I think Max was talking about having a tire changing "race" session at his place. Why don't you host a T1 and T2 event at your place and we'll see if we can work on your TArea spot locating technique! LOL! See... that's why I racked right in front of my car!

Good work out there buddy!

Nice work Glen and it was really nice to meet you. That stinks about the flat but like you said, it was a sign to just enjoy the race. Hope to see you at the Htfd Half.

Glen, great race, even w/ a flat.  This had not happened to me yet while racing, but I am sure it will, and I am not looking forward to it.

Way to move and and continue the race, and turn up the run a notch to get thru the hip pain, that I would not have thought of..

Congrats!!!!

Great Race Glen!

Fastest swim of the season in the ocean and a bit of a chop...all those swims off the cape are helping!!

Super that you changed your tire quickly and did a great time on the bike. Your run is friggin awesome....pushed thru the pain ( better be something minor) and had a great time.

It was fun....glad we all met up and did one last tri for the season!!

I don't know how you guys swim that fast in the waves....I need a freaking boat next time! Good race though, and man thats funny that I rode past you while you had the flat and didn't even put 2+2 tgether and figure out who it was. Not that I would have stopped! LOL

I would have taken the flat and the hip pain over the wind sprints on OT. Great job with your last tri of the season. BTW when you age up you will medal too, at least that is what Isis told me before her Cranberry hardware.

Alright Glen! Man you really had some odds to overcome. It sounds like you handled them all with no problem. Hope the hip pain goes away. Great job!
