Getting ready for my 2nd 1/2 marathon in February, Wildflower Olympic in May and then I'm not sure right this minute, but the though of a 1/2 iron keeps floating around in my head.  It's kind of scary cause that would be a big step up in distance for me, but maybe the 1/2 vineman or the Big Kahuna.

I blog. I've got my first marathon coming up in early December. Next year I'm planning 3 HIMs with at least 2 centuries. Depending on how the marathon goes, there's a 50k in February I'm thinking about. I've got my eyes on IM AZ '07.

Off Season???!!! Off Season???!!! We don't need no stinking Off Season!!
There are some benefits to living in an area that is not perpetuated by fruits and nuts, and endless sunshine. There is nothing like doing a an ultra ski marathon in the dead of winter on classic skis. Try one of those, and you will think a running marathon is a Sunday stroll.

Ahh I can feel it now, the frozen toes, the frozen snot on your parka, the leaky cambel back that has now turned your back into a slab of ice. Oh wait. What's that in the distance? Yes, yes, more snow. It's coming, and soon it will be dark, and it's only 3:30 in the afternoon. I'll be doing the Blog. Just you wait and see. You'll get cold just reading it.

Off Season. There is only change of season, and it never ever turns off!

My goal for this winter is to finish the Coureur des Bois (100 mile ultra ski marathon) in sub 18 hours without freezing to death or hitting the wall so hard I want to curl up and die.

I blog my training here. Goal races next season include Florida Half Ironman and Florida Challenge. I'm also thinking of doing the Grand Columbian ITU Long Course since it is available.

I blog, kind of (more logging than blogging) - working toward IM moo next September. Just took some down time after my 1/2 and a minor leg injury caused by a 15K last month. I'm gonna need some inspiration along the way - BT is the best place to get it!

Hi all,

I log my training here, and toss in a few comments about life in the gym and house moving chaos, but I don't think of that as blogging.  It's just a training log with a little extra somethin'...and I appreciate any comments on the race calendar and training plans I'm putting in there.

Anyway, I look foward to following your progress and wish you all the best in the off-season.

I'm going to keep working in the off-season at

  • getting strong enough to do pull-ups
  • getting fast enough to race longer than a 5K at an 8:00/mile pace

Cheers, -Sunny

Not much of a blogger but I utilize the planned & actual training calendars for logs...good stuff there. I'll get back to blogging Jan 1 w/a HIM training plan in prep for the Disney HIM in May.

I log my training.  Currently in a 4-6 week recovery phase through the holidays, then I'll focus on swimming form and biking as much as I can while getting 3-4 sessions a week in the gym and 1-2 easy runs per week.  I'll pick up training for the Boston Marathon in Feb and then transition right into a more balanced triathlon schedule in late April.  Planning 2-3 HIMs (Timberman, Colonial, and ?) next season with the JFK 50 miler in November as my final race of the season.  IM will likely be on the schedule in 2007...haven't even started to think about which one though.

All my training logs are now on an Excel spreadsheet. Training for the Gasparilla marathon in Feb, then the next major race will be Mooseman 1/2 IM in the beginning of June as a tune-up to Lake Placid IM at the end of July.

Well, my training is disrupted right now b/c of tbd knee issues. Wanted to get some marathons in this off season but thats looking unlikely right now. Spring A race is Galveston half the first weekend of April, maybe a marathon at the end of April, then solid prep for Lake Placid (hopefully!)...

Is it something along the outside of your knee on the side?  Could be an inflamed ITB.  If this is the case the best advice I can give you is to quit running COMPLETELY for 6-8 weeks.  I had what I believe to be an ITB problem last November and tried taking a week off, then 2 weeks...no dice.  So I finally decided to cut running completely for 2 months...not a step.  When I started LSD base training again in Feb everything was good and I've had smooth sailing through a fairly intense training/racing season.

It started on the inside, then moved to the outside, now its outside and kneecap. I think its the patellar tracking whatever its called and possibly ITB too. I think its my own stupid fault, not getting massages after my iron, just taking a couple weeks off then running again. I had IT issues in the spring and rest and massages did the trick.

Dr. appt tomorrow because it got so bad I couldn't run a mile.

Joel,
Did you experience this pain when cycling? I experience a sharp pain on the outside of my knee when cycling but NOT when running. Actually, the pain is on the outside of my knee but on the lower part of the knee - the upper calf region as well.

Could this be ITBS? I'm doubtful since the pain I feel seems to be in a slightly different area and I don't feel it when running. I think my bike setup may be the problem.

Eric

I've hooked up with a couple of IM whackos who have taken me under their wings, and who repeatedly beat me up for two hours each morning, and 3-4 hours on the weekends! I'm working harder in the off season than I did last summer, and feel my fitness level rising! Putting in lots of base miles. The ultimate goal is IM in 2007. Laughing Maybe Wisconsin, maybe Lake Placid.

Am looking to finish Spirit of Racine with grace and style. (!!!) Also looking to do another Half this season, as well as several other smaller races for fun. Woooo Hoooo!

Nope...I could bike, swim, elliptical, and lift all I wanted with no problems.  I could run for 10-15min before I would feel anything then within 5min I couldn't run another step without some serious pain.  But that doesn't mean that you don't have an ITB issue.  I'd be inclined to GUESS that since you only have problems on the bike you need to have your fit looked at.  Do your pedals have any float?

I currently use the Look PP206 pedals so I have about 5-7 degrees of float. When rotating my foot to different positions, it doesn't seem to make much difference however, when I ride bow-legged, that seems to relieve the pain. I've been looking at this

as a potential solution but will wait until I get someone to look at my fit.
