Subject: GA Peeps - 2nd annual Tony Serrano Memorial Ride!
I am not sure if folks have heard of or remember the incident, but Tony Serrano was struck 2 years ago by a car less than a mile from my house in Suwanee/Duluth. He was in the right hand that continued straight through the the intersection and was struck by a car turning into the right hand turn lane. It killed him and injured the guy he was riding with.

The police botched the accident report - citing that Tony should have been in the right hand turn lane. (Still unknown as to whether the police finally rectified the report).

The race is being done in his memory + to provide for the education of bicycling laws to police officers throughout the state.

I did not know Tony, but remember the incident and thinking that this guy who lives in the suburbs with his wife and kids, this guy who got off his rear to get back into shape (he was training for IM Wisconsin) could very well have been me.

--- so that is why this ride grabbed my attention.

Anyone else planning on doing it?

The ride is based out of Monroe ... essentially west of Lawrenceville/east of Athens and looks to be an easy drive for both. I've posted a link to a map below as well as a link to the event's website.

Specific directions are on the event website. There are multiple distance options: 20/40/60/80/105 miles.

I would like to shoot for the 60 mile option, but that would more than double my typical training ride (I usually log 25-30 miles a couple times per week). I am hoping that the staged rest areas and the "ride" instead of "race" nature of the event will enable me to stretch it out.

Any thoughts on nutrition for an event like this? How many calories per hour should be consumed ... woudl hate to run out of gas on a deserted country road .

Any other pieces of advice/tips on what to expect for a first time looooong ride?

Did it and the event was great ... would recommend it as it goes through some very pretty country side + was well supported throughout the race (and, from what I heard, each course).

Will publish race report after able to get my facilities back (absolutely blew up around ~ mile 56 or 57!).
