Elite 2706 Hurst, Texas | Subject: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? My final tri of the season is scheduled for Sunday at South Padre Island...as of right now, it is still going forward, but there have been lots of news reports of red tide conditions here, with thousands of dead fish washing ashore. I've done some research and red tide causes respiratory problems, burning eyes, etc. I'm beginning to wonder if I ought to skip it altogether...even if they convert to a du, I'll be running/biking along the shore of the island and breathing the crap in. Here is the latest update from a local news website this morning: Red tide is now at "extreme" levels in the waters around South Padre Island. New samples show the toxic algae blooms thriving at especially high levels in portions of the Laguna Madre off of Port Isabel, and in the surf at the U-T-P-A Coastal Studies Lab. The increasing levels of red tide is now killing larger game fish. Catfish, redfish, and trout have all washed up dead, along with several species of smaller bait fish. The toxic algae paralyzes fish to the point they can't breathe. It's also been causing beachgoers to suffer serious respiratory irritation and burning sensations in their eyes. Local biologists say it's tough to tell how long this major red tide outbreak will stick around. |

Elite 2421 | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? I'd bet you dollars to donuts that if there is a red tide that the race director will cancel the swim quicker than I get through T2. I'm curious and I'm going to look now, but I doubt that being in the vicinity of the water is hazardous. Those symptoms you found were from being in it, right? bts |

Master 1661 Newbury Park, CA | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? Southern Cal has had a red tide almost all summer. Usually it is just a few weeks but this year it didn't go away. Swam in it probably a dozen times and it isn't too bad. I did have a little issue with some, lets just say, loose bowel movements. There were races held where you swam right through the red tide so I don't know if they would cancel your race. |

Extreme Veteran 532 Plymouth MA | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? I never thought red tide affected people, only the ocean creatures. At least thats what my mother told us... She had 10 kids and had a summer cottage at the ocean. We were told that it was no big deal to swim during a red tide. So we did. Who knew?? |

Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? The red tide in So Cal may be different than the TX red tide. "They say" our red tide (at least the stuff close in) doesn't affect us adversely. The sea lions are affected because they eat the fish that eat the crustaceans that....... I sWaM in IT all SUmmEr AnD I Am fIne..... |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? I did the Coca-Cola/Publix sprint race on Lido Key here in Sarasota in June just after the height of the red tide. Fortunately, there was a pretty strong breeze blowing the fumes north towards Renee up in Tampa, so that cut down a lot on the coughing and eye irritation. Lots of dead fish in the water. In fact, the county had a maintenance crew there to scrape/plow the dead fish off the beach that would wash up between each of the starting waves. We were cautioned by the race officials to avoid stepping on any fish so as not to impale the bottom of our feet with dead fish bones. We joked that the person who brought the biggest dead fish back to T1 would get a prize (like maybe a two minute time bonus!) It was kind of weird swimming along and having to frequently dodge 2'-3' long dead fish floating in the water. This was also just after the bull shark attacks up on the FL panhandle. I did ponder for a moment or two whether swimming like a wounded seal in the middle of a natural chum line was really an advisable (or intelligent) thing to do. I also found out later that yellow is the bull shark's favorite color - just like the tri top I was wearing! Depending on the wind direction & strength, I would occasionally cough during the bike and run legs, but it really wasn't incapacitating or anything. I'd like to blame my poor run time on the red tide, but we all know better.. We still had some lingering effects of the red tide this past Sunday during the race on Siesta Key, with some minor coughing and eye irritation whenever the wind was blowing straight off the water. Pro 3673 MAC-opolis | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? Publix/Coca Cola race you say?? I'm surprised they did anything to help out. My Publix race in south beach was less than well run. Very well promoted, but very poorly run. I think my slow times at this race were due to the fact that the girlfriend of the guy I was standing next to had an affair (unbeknown to the guy) with some vacationer from Texas that she told me about in confidence. She breathed on me and I think that perhaps she passed on some Red Tide fumes that she acquired in the throws of infidel passion. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. |

Master 2314 Gulf Shores, AL | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? I don't know how bad it is in Texas, but last Sunday my wife and I walked down to the beach to relax. We had not heard anything about a red tide and even if we had I thought it just affected fish. We had walked about 10 feet from the building and we both started coughing (didn't know why). We walked across the beach and sat down on our towels. Within 15 minutes are eyes and noses were running like crazy and we had the sense to leave. On the way out I asked the life guard what was going on and he said Red Tide. I thought for a minute he was referring the whipping Alabama gave Florida on Saturday, but he explained the algae thing. I grew up on the gulf and worked on the water till I was 18 and I never experienced anything like it. It took 2 hours before my body recovered. It was just as bad on Monday but seemed to be improving Tuesday. I ran outside Wednesday night and had no issues. They are saying the water is still bad but the "bloom" in the air is over here. I have a reverse duathlon here next weekend and I plan on riding/running this weekend to make sure its reallly okay. If the conditions there are anything like they were here last Sunday/Monday most people won't be able to race, but it passed quickly here so not sure about there. Sorry this is so long, I wanted to post about it Sunday but never got around to it. Good luck! |

I've never heard of a red tide... although I'm from Illinois, and tides don't affect us here very much.... red or otherwise. That being said.... it sounds creepy, dangerous and ecologically imbalanced. I think I'd stay away. (!!!) Whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz |

Extreme Veteran 464 San Clemente, California | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? As reported, we had red tide virtually all summer here in SoCal, and I surf probably 5 days/week and did a couple of tris with ocean swims. The red tide here causes some sinus issues with SOME people, but not the majority. Fortunately for me, I'm okay in red tide. |

Expert 623 Wye Mills, MD | Subject: RE: Anyone swam in a Red Tide?? There are two kinds of red tides (although both can be caused by a number of different species) - toxic and non-toxic. There are algaes that actually produce toxins, and this is what it sounds like is blooming on the gulf coast, and can be harmful to humans. The other variety will still turn the water a red or burgundy color, and will still kill fish, but it kills fish by deoxygenating the water when the algae dies and is eaten by anaerobic bacteria. It is not toxic to humans, but can result in illness (diarrhea, etc...) if you ingest the water. |
