Subject: home made rollers
Hi All,
I'm looking at trainers / rollers. I'm leaning towards rollers, but the price is a killer. Rollers don't look all that complicated. Has anyone made rollers? I have access to all the tools that wold be required. I haven't looked at the cost for raw materials, but I should be able to get it cheap.

Just out of curiosity, what would be the tools you use to make rollers?  I haven't made rollers, but I have made a stand for the front fork when I have my bike on the trainer.  I imagine you could do it with steel framing and some PVC pipe.  Nashbar has this:

Not really much help for you, but I'd love to hear how you do it because I love building stuff myself.

I have access to a machine shop, so a lathe, cnc, etc. I just need to come up with an idea for the bearings and axle.

You could do it like a rollerblade wheel.  Screws into the ball bearing, which are friction fitted to the drums.  Something like that, but I don't know for sure.  Sounds pretty cool though.

I would think the hard part would be the strap or band to connect the front roller to the drive roller to provide the proper spin. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it would require some real skill to get it right. I hope you can do it. If you can put a pic of it up here so we can all see it! Good luck!
