Hi folks! Really dumb question coming your way:

I swim in my health club's "mini-Olympic" pool. I thought it was 25 meters across. But when I look at my training plan (winter maintenance) it suggests I do 2000 yards today. Now, aren't yards and meters same, so that would be 80 one ways or 40 round trips, is that right?

And isn't 32 round trip laps a mile? So, 40 would be a bit over a mile, eh?

Told you it was dumb!

A yard and a meter is similar, but not the same. I think 1 yard = 0.9144 meter. Hence, 2000 yard = 1820 meters, which is equal to 72.8 lengths (36.4 laps). 1 mile = 1.609KM, so to swim 1 mile, you need to do 64 lengths (32 laps) in a 25M pool. So yes! you are right.

Also, make sure it really is 25 meters. 25 meter pools are pretty rare compared to 25 yard pools.

meters aren't the same as yard pools

for every 900meters, you do about 1000y.
People swim the 1650y race as fast as the 1500m race (maybe 6 seconds difference)

For every 2minutes, subtrace 10 seconds from your meters time to yield yards

Kandice:

Not a dumb question ... you'll be converting yard to meters, meters to miles and so forth as you do your training logs + calculate swim distances in races to laps in pools.

My favorite on-line measurement conversion website is: http://www.onlineconversion.com/... but there are dozens of others.

2 Things

1. Make sure it is really 25 yards (or meters). Very few health club pools are actually that long, even though they call themselves "olympic" sized.

2. Don't worry about converting. Swim 2,000 of whatever your pool offers. The difference is not so great at that distance to be worth getting worked up about (unless you plan on trying out for the Olympic team!)

Have fun and enjoy yourself!

Kandice,

I'm wondering how the staff at the local pool are gonna react when you get the tape measure out.
