It is useless to recommend long rides in zone 1 and 2 in the winter. Nobody is going to spend 4-5 hours on the trainer regularly. The LSD stuff in the winter is OK if you live in SOCAL. For everybody else, it is not practical because of weather and shorter days. The alternatives are short slow distance (not productive ), or adding some harder stuff in (more productive ). I like Rich's big gear progression ideas for trainer workouts. Also check out Michael McCormack. However, you will not find much detail on his site.
