Hey y'all,

So I was in a spin class today and was about 30 minutes in to the suffer fest when I got a side stitch. Much as I tried, I couldn't get it to go away so I hopped off the bike to stretch it out fully. When I got off the bike, I started to feel extremely light headed and nearly nauseuos. I had to lay down to keep from passing out. Did I just overdo it or what? I sure as hell don't want to experience this again not only because of how it felt but also how stupid I felt laying there amid the bikes. Thoughts?

Tom

A guess...you were working real hard but not getting enough O-2. When you are working hard it is important to breathe nice and deep and keep it flowing in and out.

Do you have a heart rate monitor? If not, you might want to invest in one if you plan to spin regularly.

Funny you should ask. My co-worker posed the same question and the answer is no. However, its on my christmas list. I love kicking my own a$$ in a workout but nearly passing out's a little ridiculous.

I've never gotten a side stitch in spin class, but I have gotten them a few times when biking.  I don't get them often on the bike, but when I do I pretty much have to stop biking to get rid of them.  I have never been able to pin point any type of trend that would cause them.  It seems like I get them randomly out of the blue.  Sorry  I can't offer a lot you any tips- but I can sympathize.  They really kill- at least with running you can run them off.  With biking you're pretty much screwed if you get one

No kidding!!! I couldn't get the darn thing to go away. Interesting that I didn't feel fuzzy 'til I hopped off the bike... Well, I'll try not to kill myself when I go spin again on Friday!

I never felt dizzy- but when I get them it's really difficult to breath and take a deep breath. So maybe you got dizzy because you weren't getting deep breaths and had to take quick, shallow breaths??  I dunoo...I'm no doc but just guessing.  I'm going to spin class tonight.  Just because I thought "I haven't gotten one of those in awhile" I've probably jynxed myself and will get one tonight

Sounds like you stopped too suddenly.  You experienced the reason that you hear people preaching about cooldowns...not like it sounds like you had a choice!

Many times side stitches result from dehygration (a cramp in the diaphragm).  Make sure you drink plenty of fluid before and during the spinning class.  Also take deep breath to relax your diaphragm may help.  As for bonking... it's like you didn't let yourself cool down slowly but stopped all of a sudden.  Next time if it happen again, try slowing down your pedaling before getting off the bike.  Hope this helps.

Two things here. 1 - Side stitch is probably from overdoing it and not breathing properly, but that you got from above. The bonking only 30 min in is a. a result of not eating properly (though unlikely in the small amount of time you rode) or b. blood pooling. When you do extremely hard running or cycling, the bloodflow increases to the muscles of the lower leg. When you stop suddenly, your heart rate drops and with all the blood in your legs, your body has a tough time getting enough oxygenated blood to the brain. This is the reason we have cool downs. It can be fairly common and will leave you feeling light headed until you get rid of the extra blood in the legs. Lying down or even just sitting down so it is easier to move that blood around help.
