Subject: half marathon training question

Hey BTers, I'm planning my first 15K on March 26, 2006. I'm also thinking about a half marathon on May 7, 2006. So, that gives me about 6 weeks between the two races. I’m planning on a slow build to the 15K (following Hal’s plan, with an extra week thrown in, plus I will be working on my running base all winter).  Here's a tentative plan for the long runs (comes mostly from Hal's half mary plan):

26-Mar-15K
1-Apr-8 mi
8-Apr-9 mi
15-Apr-10 mi
22-Apr-10.5 mi
29-Apr-11 mi
7-May-1/2 mary

What do you think, are the two races doable?

Also, Hal Higdon's half marathon plan has you running 10 miles as the long run the week before the race. And then running 13 miles the next week. Am I going to be able to run that additional 3 miles without training, and without injury? I've heard that you never run the full distance, but after getting a stress fracture last year b/c of increasing my mileage too quickly, I'm a little paranoid about that extra distance (esp. since this would be coming into tri race season). That's why I put the 11 mile day in before the 1/2 mary, but that still leaves 2 miles.....

Thanks for any suggestions!!!

Yeah the two races are completely doable. And your slow increase is very conservative. With races shorter than a marathon, a lot of plans include some overdistance training, but it's definitely not necessary. Good luck!

Consider doing the 11 on the 22nd then backing off on the 29th to 8 or 9, kind of a mini-taper.

If you can run 11 in training, you can run 13.1 with adrenaline and adequate preparation.

I'd be a little concerned about building your long run volume continuouslly right up to the half. I would either drop your 10 mile long run to a 6 mile and then change your 10.5 to a 10 and keep your 11 before hitting the 1/2. Alternatively, you could do 15k/8M/9.5M/11M/8M/6M/Race. The bottom line is that you're trying to cram long-run volume into a short period without a recovery or a taper. I would wager you'd have a better race day by either adding a rest week in the middle, or being more aggressive with your build up, and then tapering beforehand.

Good luck!

Or you could jump by two miles and have a setback every other week: 15K, 8, 10, 8, 12, 8, race. There are so many different philosophies...

Knowing the success rate of Hal's plans, I'd say stick close to his plan as possible with the other race thrown in. I'm surprised there is not a bit of a taper there ......

And don't sweat the additional miles. If you can do 10, you can do 13 (think of it this way, Hal only has 20's in his marathon plans, even for the beginner and the full is an additional 6.2 more than that).
