I am assuming many of you got the e-mail from Javelin regarding the year end sale, including the Zero wheelsets.

Besides the great price, anybody know anything about them, how they compare to Zipp/Mavic/Reynolds...

I looked around the internet and really could not find any info except from www.zerocomponents.com. Javelin seems somehow connected to them.

Any opinions?

Hey, I changed e-mail addresses and never updated w/Javelin.  Would you mind PM'ing me the text of the e-mail.  Stake needs some new wheels...

BTW, I'm pretty sure Javelin & Zero are the same company.  I've heard nothing but good things about the wheels...

a zero disc (without the discount) is $1100 a HD superlite disc $700ish. you need to be getting a huge discount to even balance that out.

Huh?  Could you compare the HED to the zero?  I believe a Zipp disc goes for $1300+.  I guess they must not sell any.

Unfortunately, I don't know how they compare so I couldn't say.

i just figure a brand as low as zero would be more cost freindly. i am not on team javelin, but even with a yearend discount plus team discount, i figure i still would buy hed. As a big brand goes, it still has the cost savings and name brand..... why worry about discounts?

edit: what is the diff from these discs? not a whole lot... so i go to cost savings....

The Zero Team closout discount brings the disc to ~$725 I believe. I wouldn't compare it to the Hed...The Zero is a full carbon tubular, the Hed is a aluminum rim clincher. The Hed "Super Light" weighs in at 1270g for the 700c model. The Zero weighs 975g. For reference, the Zipp 900 tubular disc weighs 965g. The Zero is very much coparable to the Zipp and the Hed, IMHO, is a lesser product compared to either Zipp or Zero. For $725 the Zero is a killer deal! I'm extremely tempted to jump on one even though I just bought a set of American Classic 58mm tubulars and probably shouldn't drop another $700 on a disc...but at that price I find it hard not to take advantage.

Edit:  Main differences are the weight obviously, and the bearings in Zipp wheels are generally considered to be the best on the market.  The American Classic wheels I just bought actually use the Zipp 404 rims with an AC hub but go for $400 less than the Zipps...it's all in the bearings.

Another option to consider is the Renn Madiera.  Although it's an aluminum rim it weighs only 980g for the tubular version and sells for $700.  The other Renn option, the Kaiser, is a bit heavier (1120g) but also costs only $550...a great choice if budget is a serious concern.
