Subject: Electra Cruisers...cool or totally dorky?

My LBS just started carrying Electra cruisers.  They have a new "Straight 8" as well as a "Rat Rod".  In a way, they seem totally cool and like a great "around the neighborhood with the kids" bike.  On the other hand, I also think...but are they too dorky?

Any thoughts?

My 7 year old son just confirmed my vote for dorky.  He said, "Come on mom, those bikes are not cool at all!"

Ride either one in a tri, and I'll think you're cool.

Yep, they have the Shimano 3 speed.  I am looking for a bike for regular "play riding" that I don't have to clip in and out of when riding for leisure with the family.  I was thinking a MTB, but then I saw these Electras and thought it might be a cool bike to have.  I'm still not sure.

I'd like to ride the 2nd bike in a tri and beat someone on it. Now THAT would really be cool!

I don't know if those two would be my favs, but I do like the retro look cruiser bikes that have been out the last few years. I think they'd be great for casual rides with the family - but if you have active kids who you might want to go trail riding with wouldn't a MTB prevent you from someday maybe needing a THIRD bike? If that's not going to happen then I'd definitely get a cruiser.

If you're lucky maybe someday someone will make fun of you on it and then you'll get to see the look on their face when you blow their doors off!

Dorky. Then again, life's entirely too short to care about what other people think.

One man's dorky is another man's cool. If you ride it, you like and you don't care what anyone else thinks...that's cool.

Sorry kimta but if I listened to what my 7 year old godson thinks is cool I would walk around in a firemans helmet and underoos. Coolness is a state of mind. But I think those things look pretty rad.

Depends on the situation. You'd look pretty dorky riding Cervelo down the beach...

Maybe because I don't have kids, I think I could come up with a better use for my money then one of those bikes.

If I had to reprocreate with someone with that last bike on earth, the human species goes extinct.

For every bike there is a season
cruisers are for ......cruising,
you ride them to go to the coffee shop
or bar-hopping
you ride them in jeans and flip-flops
cruisers are a mobile couch upon which to hold court

Whatcha gonna do, wear your skinsuit and aerohelmet into the ice cream shop?

(Ice Cream Clerk) OH MY GOD!!!!!! EEK!!!!! It's the evil villian  TRANSFATMAN, and he's take over the butter pecan

(TRANSFATMAN) BWWWAHHAHAHA!!!! that's right my pretty I'm taking over this joint, quick evil henchman on to the fudge ripple

(ICC) Woe is me, who will save me from  the ravages of this foul cad
(cue music...Eye of The tiger)

(TRIMAN) Never fear citizen, I'll save you

At this point our hero executes a perfect shoes-in-the-pedals dismount and rushes into the shop wielding the pull bouy of doom and engages TRANSFATMAN in an epic battle shattering glass and sending icecream all over a three block radius.
Meanwhile Dude on cruiser wheels up to the store, walks in, and staring slack-jawed at the destruction remarks "Yo, mang....can you hit a bro up with some Chunky Monkey".

I think they are soooooo cool.
I've participated in couple chopper nights (bicycles not motorcycles) and I must confess I've developped a taste for "chopper" style bikes. So much that I cannot wait to get one to take for a ride on chopper nights (those gatherings are so much fun! you will see al kind of "rebels" doing amazing things with bikes). Fun, Fun, Fun (plus I've heard Electra build A+ quality cruisers).
