Subject: i found a tri - but what race should i enter???
i have found a tri in a couple of months time, and was thinking it may be good for my first one. however, there is a novice and normal event. i am not sure (if i enter) which on to enter...should i test the water with the novice event (the swim and run is very short) or should i just do the normal one as that would be sprint distance. Run and swim i think are my stronger points (as i have only been on 3 bike rides to date! but am trainning hard on it

details are:

The 2004 event is taking place on June 6th and is a sprint distance comprising a 500 metre swim, a 24 kilometre bike and a 5 kilometre run. Current Start List

We also have a Novice event for people who are new to triathlon and this includes a 250m swim, 24k bike and a 2.5k run.

Any advice would be great

Only you can decide which one to participate in.You have about two more months to get ready for the tiathlon. The one you opt to participate in will depend on your assessment of your fitness level. How long have you been training? Have you tried a mini triathlon of your own or a brick? Test yourself once in awhile.

well i have been trainning running for about 9months and swimming seriously for about 2months, i have only just started biking, so this needs more work, especially as its the biggest segment. i haven't tried a mini or a brick (i just found out what this is but i will in a couple of weeks. then maybe i should reassess the situation????? I think you are definetly right only i can know (makes the post a bit redundent now but i need to try some brick's definitely to see if i can cope with the transition.

I'd do the novice event. At least you'll probably be in there with other novices and you'll feel less intimidated by all the proceedings. And to be honest, for a person who hasn't cycled much, 24 K is going to seem like a LONG ways, unless of course you have covered that distance on a ride already. Try going out for a 24 K ride, and then imagine how it will be doing it, possibly on a hot day, after swimming and then telling yourself that you have to run 2.5 K immediately after. Just doing that ride will tell you a lot and probably make your decision for you!

In my experience with just two novice-type events, I would never do one again even if I could! Most of the novices are not going to have a clue about navigating in the swim or if indoors no idea how fast they will actually go. In either case they will be in your way if you are halfway decent at swimming. Same thing on the bike, novices will not be a good about adhering to the "keep right rule" and way cause you to have to deal with excess bike traffic as you work your way around them.

Do the longer one.  If you can do the swim and run and the bike is the same, why not do the bigger one?

Triatlete people are some of the best in the world.  They'll take care of you if you let them know you are a newbie.  If you've got 8 weeks, that's plenty of time to get up to speed on the bike.  I did my first practice tri (sprint distance) after 8 weeks of training.  It wasn't fast, but I felt good on all three legs and didn't have any trouble finishing things.

Think big!

I'm with Max, Andy--take a long bike ride and see how it feels for you. If you realize that the goal of doing the distances is already going to be your biggest stretch, perhaps take the novice route. You won't be in that category for long, though!!

Novices and repeaters alike have a hard time sighting during a swim.

Do the ride, the choice will probably be easier!!

Good luck!

If it were me, I think the possibility of coming home with some hardware in the novice category would decide it for me. Life is all about picking up shiny cool stuff along the way, right?

I lived in the UK for 3 years. There seem to be a lot more magpies there, and people had rhymes and superstitions about them that I'd never heard.

The one I heard was 1 for sorrow, 2 for joy, 3 for a wedding, 4 for a boy, 5 for silver, 6 for gold, 7 for the biggest lie you ever told.

And people would flip them off or salute. Crazy....

In my experience I did the novice tri first and finished 2nd in my age group.Which boosted my ego big time. Next week I do the sprint tri. and not looking for anything but a finish at this point.

I joined a Tri club and have received much help from my friends, including my first open water swim with the group. What an experience.

still you have to make the choice.
