Hello everyone, long time reader, first time poster. I just started training for my first triathlon, have been interested in tri's for quite some time and finally put away all fo the excuses and signed up for the Philly Tri at the end of June. Is an olympic Tri too much for a first time? Obviosuly I'm not looking to break any records, more to finish and build from there. Any advice would be much appreciated, the people on the site seem very knowledgable and supportive which I'm sure will be a great help! Currently I'm a pretty competent runner (at least for me), 10k in the high 40's. and an decent cyclist, the swim is where I will need to improve the most. I guess my 2 questions would be; does anyone have any advice on becoming a better swimmer (lessons? volume? drills?) and are there any shorter multisport events in eastern pa, jersey, delaware, or northeast MD in May? Thanks, kee up the great work on the site!!!!

Welcome to the site.

You can find events in your area by visiting www.trifind.com

To help you with swimming you can get the Total Immersion Book. This is good for people starting out.

Once a year I visit a clinic where I get videotaped underneath the water. I like to have my technique evaluated by somebody who swims for a living. Then I make my adjustments based on their critique.

Welcome.
There are plenty of events in May. The New Jersey Devilman Half Iron and Sprint Tri is on May 7th at Shaw Mills Pond, NJ. I did it last year its a good time. Also The Brandwine Duathlon in Delaware City, DE is in late April.
Check out http://www.piranha-sports.com/for more info
Also http://www.lin-mark.com/race/race_list.aspis a good resourse for finding local events (running, biking, and tris).
As far as going faster, when you figure that one out let me in on the secret.

Your timeline is very reasonable. I use trifind.com to find my races, they have as comprehensive a directory as I've seen and it's broken down by state. Right now the 06 races are listed below the remaining 05 ones. There will be a lot of races added in the upcoming months. Just shield your eyes from their annoying blue screen.

Welcome!

I did the Devilman sprint last year as my first before doing Philly in June.  You shouldn't have any problems.  Lessons would be your best bet with the swimming.  And be prepared to try to get in the water 3x/week if possible for a few months.  In 6-8 weeks, you'll probably be ready to finish the distance.

Welcome to the club.

To answer your question about swimming. Drills will make you a better swimmer. You can look into a masters program (not that many around in the philly area), you can get lessons or you can look into the Total Immersion book and DVD. Once you get the drills down then you will do volume.

You can visit trifind.com or Lin-mark.com these sites will show you races in our area. Believe it or not you can race almost every other weekend the tristate area. Only a few 2006 races are posted right now, but keep checking the website.

Best of luck to you.

It seems we have a nice little Philly group here maybe we can get some group training going come spring.

welcome! i'll echo what has already been said. better to focus on form on the swim first, versus lots of laps w/ bad form. try to find someone who knows what to look for who can watch you in the water and give you feedback. best of luck!
