Hi. I am very green to all of this but am looking forward to my first sprint next year. I started running 5Ks this fall and and realized I really liked the people I met and thought the whole racing thing was fun! I've always wanted to try a tri and now I've told enough friends that I'm definitely commited. I don't think I'll be ready for a swim in the Schukyll by July but I'm aiming for the Sprint at Dewey Beach in September.

I do most of my training in a cemetery behind my house. Its very popular with local runners and bikers and I hope the deceased like the company- there haven't been any complaints so far

My big weakness is I hate training at my local Y in the very chlorinated indoor pool.. Is there any land based workout that can take the place of swimming sometimes?

BTW for the other Philly Newbie - there is a sprint every April in Bethesda MD with a pool swim in the local Y - I'm going to do it - its near my mom's house and I figure I'll get fed dinner afterward

Training in a cemetery. The opening line to a movie comes to mind ,"They're coming to get you Sara." (Original Night of the Living Dead, but of course that was set outside Pittsburg so you should be OK)
As far as swimming goes, once the good weather returns you can find an outdoor pool (outdoor pools usually are less heavily clorinated) and you can justify a few extra trips to the beach. But the best thing is to learn to live with the indoor pool until May.
One possible alternative you can use is a rowing machine. It gives you a good full body aerobic workout that hits most of the major muscules, but it can't give you the peace of mind you need before that first real swim.
Good Luck and Have Fun.

Welcome and good luck...you underestimate yourself, if your starting now you will absolutely have time to properly train for a June race. Although your probably refering to the Philly Tri which I believe is sold out. You can find a good race calendar at trifind.com.

In the spring I will be setting up some open water swims and I am in the Phill area. If you get me your e-mail I will put you on my e-mail list.

Welcome!

Yeah, the Y pools are loaded with chlorine.  But your best bet is to get used to it because you need to get in the water to learn to swim better.  You can do some land-based work to simulate the muscle movements, but swimming is heavily weighted towards form.  The best way to work on that is in the water!

Welcome

I agree the only way you will improve your swimming is by swimming. There is not land base program that will help ya, god how i wish there was. I also plan some open water swims in the Marlton NJ area.

Klienrider, I would like to do the open water swims...Marlton is pretty close. How will you let people know about them? I also agree with your post to the other Philly newbie...it seems like we could have a nice size BT Philly training group if we can get it together!

let me know about those openwater swims too!

which cemetary are you referring to? right now I do most of my running in Newtown before I coach and other times I go to the Kelly/West River drive or down Oregon Ave to run. However I am in the middle of moving to Fairmount (22nd & Mt. Vernon) so I will have direct access to the Drive's all the time. Also, unless I am riding the Schuykill Train to Valley Forge, I am usually riding on the drives as well. Maybe see you around there.

I guess i'll post something in the Philly thread, when the weather gets nice. There are a ton of lakes in the Marlton area, most of those housing developments have some sort of lake. Yeah i think we could have a nice little group. Maybe we could have one week in the NJ area and then the next week in Philly, keep it fair for everyone. I guess we'll have to see what work for everyone.

Hi...You guys keep talking about getting people together for open water swims...I am also in the Philly area and will be looking for somewhere/people to do some open water swims with before my first tri in June. Let me know how you guys are going to do this, I would love to join you, I have some issues about swimming in open water and would like to get over some of these fears before throwing myself into one for the first time in a race!

Hello and welcome!!! I live right across the river from you. Good luck with training for your first tri. I wanted to also mention that I think the Mays Landing sprint is a great race for beginners. It was my first race ever and it was an awesome introduction to the sport. I guess it'll be about an hour from you - not sure if you're right in Philly or out in the suburbs. It's in early July, but there's been talk about it being discontinued .

You'll find a lot of great advice and motivation on this site. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion - I looked for a the date for 2006 and found at sprint in June at Belleplain State Forest - is this the one you mean? its about an 1 1/2 hrs away on the way to Cape May. I was going to do the Dewey Beach because I've heard it's "newbie friendly" but I also heard it may not happen in 2006.

the Mays Landing race that she/he is talking about my not be on-line yet (a lot of the sprint races don't open up until after the new year). The Mays Landing races is by far the most friendly race for first-timers as are all the sprint races that are local to the Philly area.  I did hear the Mays Landing race may not happen this year, i sure hope it does cause that is a great race.

I am sure as more of the sprint races open up in our area someone if not me will posted them.

I just wanted to add my welcome to the rest from the site. You will find many wonderful people here at BT. Also great advice can be found in the articles, and what isn't in the articles, you can ask in the forums. You might be surprised at how soon you are ready, you will find training plans from couch to sprint in 16 to 20 weeks. Good luck on reaching the goals you have set, and you just might even surprise yourself by beating your goals.

Were you at the T3 Club meeting at Fleet Feet a couple of weeks ago? I wanted to say hi. Are you spearheading the group training in the area...If so I'm interested.

I've yet to be in a race that didn't appear to me to be "beginner friendly". It's been my experience that one of the hallmarks of triathlon is that everyone (ok...99.9%) is positive and friendly. This goes for the bigger races as well as the smaller ones.

In my first tri four years ago I arrived late, had to scramble to find a spot in transition, leaned on the rack to get my shoes offf and...knocked the entire rack of bikes over. Nobody even gave me a dirty look and most people got a good laugh. That being said...try not to knock over the rack of bikes.

if you are talking to me, yes i was at the T3 meeting a few weeks ago, i sat off to the side next to a girl and one of the T3 members who talked about the coach thing.  I would love to get some training going. If the T3 thing doesn't happen i taken upon myself to get some group training going.
