Subject: South Carolina Half - any thoughts?

I'm trying to pick a half-ironman for next fall in driving distance and the only two I can find is the South Carolina Half and Great Florida Challenge. I'm being advised against GFT, so I'm looking for some thoughts on the SC Half. Has anyone done it or know anyone who has? I can't seem to find any reviews anywhere.

Is Durham, NC too far to drive? The Duke Liver Half Ironman is a great event. I have been a spectator, not a competitior. I think it's Sep. 10th in 2006.

I haven't done the SC 1/2 yet although it is my goal for this season. I have however raced the Festival of Flowers Oly in Greenwood that uses the same route. It is a great race and very well organized. I have heard nothing but raves about the Half.

Thank you so much for the info! Since you've ridden the course before, how is it - flat, hilly??

I am strongly considering trying the sc half. I am slow and new to this and by that time will have a years base under me (I hope)....somebody post something positive about it so I'll sign up....anyone ???? I am considering going and cycling the course in the next few weeks and seeing how it is, I'll post when/if I do.

Wow, I've got to learn to read a calendar more closely. Three races I really want to do:
SC Half     1 Oct
Pinehurst Oly   7 Oct
Hickory Knob Oly   14 Oct

Decisions...decisions

Assuming I don't crash at St A's - I'm planning on doing the Festival of Flowers Oly in June. It's on the same course as the Half, which should give me a good idea of what I'm in for. BTW - I have heard several positive comments about the course now.

Thanks for the tip on checking the SC board too Janelle.

If anyone rides or runs the courses, let us know.

Would anyone be interested in doing a ride of this course during the week with me and perhaps an ows as well ? I usually don't work mon-thursday, and I just want to do any easy ride of the course.

If I don't get any response, I'll post a time and date and see if anyone shows....anyone, anyone

Thanks

I've offically decided today to do Festival of FLowers!!  I'm excited because I've been trying to find an olympic to do wihtin the next 2 months that doesn't require a lot of traveling.  I was originally going to do a local sprint next month, but I can't justify paying the same amount to race a sprint when I could do an olympic for the same price.  I'd rather do a longer race.  And...since I'm doing the SC 1/2, Festival of Flowers would be good preparation.

I hope we get a good BT turn out at this race.  Anyone else interested?

I looked at last year's results (I shouldn't have done that), and they seem really fast- gulp.

Yeah - I'm glad that you decided to do this race! We'll have to have a little BT get-together that weekend.

I'm doing the Lake Murray, the Festival of Flowers, and the SC 1/2.

The SC 1/2 was a "Top Ten to do races of 2006"... i forget which issue... maybe like January issue...

See everyone there! - Well... at least those of you with a headshot avatar.

Yay for another BT'er doing FOF and the SC 1/2!!  Glad to hear the SC 1/2 has a good reputation.  I'm looking forward to it!
