Subject: Perfect ring for the coming nuptials?

I know my fiancee loves me dearly, but do you think I'd be pushing it if I got this ring for the coming wedding in Feb '06?

http://www.escapesdesign.com/rings/carbon/rcf_u_002.html

Understand - the bike fund has been raided more than once for THE EVENT, so I am trying to salvage some vestige of carbon fiber goodness for THE (eventual) PURCHASE.

Hey my man....  have you asked her what she thinks of carbon fiber?  I think it is great... but will she think so too?   I'll ask her if I were you....

How is that Houston training going?

Bro, this is your wedding. I'd go traditional. If you can't afford to manage the wedding and all it requires AND a new bike... then choose which one is most important to you. If you're willing to sacrifice aspects of your marriage/wedding for the sake of a bicycle... then maybe there are other issues that need to be recognized instead of the bank account.

As it so happens, I have the perfect ring for your to-be. Let's see if I can attach them...

Well, no. Apparently I lack key technical skills. But PM me if you're interested and I will send. That I can manage.

I second Luis on check with her. The wedding is the wedding. You want something that is meaningful for both of you, and for the rest of your lives together, which we all hope will be a mighty long time. This is that in-sickness-and-in-health thing: you may not always be a triathlete, but you will always be her husband.

Not to freak you out or anything.

Yeah. One thing to remember: The wedding needs to be forever; the ring doesn't have to be. So get something you both want now, and maybe you can get the carbon fiber later. You know, for special occasions. Like the Tour de France.

Do you think your love is best represented by carbon, which can be found even in the ashes of a fire, or by gold?

There is a reason gold is considered a precious metal.

If she is a die hard tri geek or cyclist AND you have talked about it with her, then maybe that might be the right type of ring to get.

But there is always something to be said for a nice gold or platinum ring. I have even seen titanium advertised ........ but that is close to the idea of the carbon ring ....... :shrugs:

Unless carbon fiber has some special meaning to you both, a ring like that would go over much the same as giving her a lawnmower for Xmas.

As a wise man told me before I got married "you can either be right or you can be happy, chose wisely." I asked my wife what she wanted for rings and then thats what I got!

There's always the possibility of getting non-matching rings. Why do they have to match? My husband wanted titanium and I didn't. He got the ring he wanted and I got the ring I wanted. Our engravings match on the inside. The important thing is that they are a symbol of our marriage and we're both happy wearing them.

I once gave my wife a canoe and a fishing pole for her birthday. We're still together after 32 years, so maybe that says more about her than me!

Wait? Is the ring for you or her? I'm assuming you--so I think you should get whatever ring you want. You're the one wearing it, if you like it and its what you want to spend, great! I don't see why the rings have to match. My ex and I had both our rings custom made, both different.

As for the "lawnmower" thing, I'm with Max-I don't see anything wrong with it... I'm not one of those girls who'd get mad if their SO gave them a treadmill or something practical for a gift, especially if its something to make their life easier.

OOh- I like some of those titanium bands!  Much prettier than the carbon bands.  But to have a carbon is pretty cool I think, although they aren't so pretty looking.

Haha, so does this mean he doesn't have to get her diamonds?

I'd go buy the diamonds from a wholeseller and have a ring made. You tell her you how much thought you put into the design and just think of the nookie you'll get for months to come.

I had a long talk last night before bedtime and the future Mrs. Gomez and I talked (don't you love it when arguments devolve into rational discussions with the spouse? Makes me know I've got the right woman).

I think she's going to go platinum (matches her engagement ring) and I will go titanium (it matches my watch).

My beloved loves silver and platinum , so it's a good compromise. While I thought (for about 2 minutes) the carbon fiber ring was cool, ultimately I came around to thinking long view - I will have it forever and didn't want something too terribly trendy.

Joe - words to live by: Happy Wife - Happy Life!

Thanks everbody for your input!

Yep - the engagement ring pretty much has the carbon part covered.... She has enough carbon in that thing to MAKE a bike from it :D

LOL, yup!!!

As you know, the word diamond comes from the Greek adamao. It means to subdue or to tame.

Not a very good symbol for a marriage of mutual self giving.

'Course in the tradition of giving a pre-nuptual diamond it was meant to symbolize mutual fidelity. But if only the woman wears it, what does that mean?

An endlessly circling ring of gold, the metal that symbolizes eternity, worn on the third finger , the one the ancient Egyptians thought contained a vein connected directly to the heart, that's the ticket.

Diamond is an allotrope of carbon (meaning it is carbon and only carbon) same as graphite and coal.
