Pat Tillman, EX-NFL Player from the AZ Cardinals who left the NFL to serve as an Army Ranger was killed in Afghanistan.

He prepared for training camp two years ago, by competing in a triathlon.

He gave up a 3.6M contract with the NFL to serve in the Army.

And more of the story is told:

Tillman awarded the Silver Star posthumously for taking action to help save his platoon during an ambush.

This really strikes home to me, as I went through college on an Army ROTC scholarship, my younger brother just got back from a year in Iraq with the 101st, my cousin is active duty Air Force, ... The sacrifice that these men and women make is beyond comparison, and thinking about that is one of the things that drives me to push myself, in work and in play.

Sorry about the soapbox, just needed to share...
