Subject: Pump or CO2?
I am considering getting rid of my bike pump for CO2 cartridges. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this subject?

I have deceided to stay with the pump for a few reasons. It is reusable. The Co2 is a one chance deal. If you mess up, your done. If you get two flats, you need two cartriges. I have thought about getting Co2 for races, but if I get a flat I figure time won't matter as much any more.

on the flip side, my frame is so small I have no place to put a pump.  I carry 2 cartridges, nad I better get it right!

Ellen,

Have you used the CO2 yet? Is it pretty easy to do? I know once you puncture the cartridge, the air is flowing till it's gone. It just seems like anytime I use my bike pump, I never can get enough pressure in the tire.

I have CO2 for races only, and I have yet to use it. I know I should practice before I actually need it, but it is so hard for me to purposely flat a tire to repair!!!!

BTW I learned a convenient way to carre the cartridge is upside down in its holder (so that it does not get punctured). It takes up less room than carrying the two parts separately.

I've never use the cartridges. Perhaps I am just old-fashioned but I like to have something that I know will be working when I need it...my mini-pump. It only takes a few seconds to pump up a tire anyways and I carry the pump between the leg of my lycra shorts and my outer thigh; and with two spare tubes and two tire irons in my back pocket I am ready for "flat-fixin'" any time. ;-)

I have used a cartridge before but it was a few years ago.  God help me if I ever need to use it again........

it will pump it up enough for you to ride, probably not an optimal amount tho.  Since I can't get to 90+psi with a hand pump even if I could mount one, it's an equal trade off for me.

Check some of the bike catalogs, like Performance and Nashbar, or your local bike shop. They sell a cartridge head that has a valve incorporated so you can control the flow of the CO2. The cartridges either press on or screw onto the head. I carry a small pump on my frame, but it's annoyingly in the way, and I'm thinking of changing over to the CO2 route, carrying a couple of cartridges which will fit either in my under-saddle bag or in my jersey pocket.

Here's a link to the Bike Nashbar inflators and CO2 cartridges:

One quick question, You can control the amount of PSI to the CO2 pump? Example, 95, 100, 105?? I heard some stories about the CO2 exploding the tubes....

Thanks....

I recently had to change my status from "I need to practice using a CO2 cartridge" to "Crap, I had my 1st flat and used my CO2 cartridge".

I just bought a pump and will carry it with me also....
