Subject: T-Shirt Quilt?
So I just spent my day off going through all my clothes and discovered that I have A LOT of T-Shirts. "A lot" is an understatement. I could probably clothe a small nation with the amount of T-shirts I have. I put a handful of them in a bag to give to Goodwill, but when it comes down to it, I just can't part with most of my T-shirts. I rarely ever wear them as I have my few "favorites" and don't really wear cotton when working out. But, my T-shirts mean a lot to me - race Ts, concert Ts, Ts from softball tourneys from like 15 years ago, Ts from vacation spots, Ts from Hard Rock Cafes around the world, Ts from high school and college, etc., etc.

I was thinking about making one of those T-shirt quilts (where you cut out the main part of the t-shirt to make the squares for the quilt). Unfortunately, I have no quilting/sewing experience at all. Have any of you ever made T-shirt quilt? Do you know of any good resources (I've been finding some stuff online)? Will this take me a long time (like long enough that I'll probably never finish)? Or, do you have other ideas for preserving your T-shirts? Just can't decide what to do with all of them...I am running out of room in my drawers, but can't imagine parting with them either.

I am waiting to quilt all my t-shirts.  I have taken a quilting class before and have made 2 quilts, but I've never taken a class speficially for t-shirt quilts.  There's one offered though at the quilting store, and I'll probably learn when I'm ready to make my t-shirt.  It's really the easiest type of quilt to make and wouldn't take a lot of time.  I think it's a great way to save your t-shirts and make them useful   Check your local sweing/quilitng store and see if they offer classes or know of people who would do it for you.  If you wait long enough I can make yours after I make mine, but that might be awhile

Good idea - I never thought to look into a quilting store or something. I am so out of the loop when it comes to this type of stuff. I'll see what I can find. Thanks!!!

I can almost gaurantee that if you walk into a qulitng store, they'll have classes for it.  Or someone who works there can do it for you.  I think the standard requirement for a t-shirt quilt is 20 t-shirts, but you could get around that with more/less.  That's the beauty with quilting- you can change things up and still get a quilt- love it!!  Before I started tri trianing, i was really into quilting.

LMAO! Does anyone else find that funny?...Janelle, I'm glad you started tri training. I would think its hard to meet guys while quilting....

btw: my mom is making my t-shirt quilts. I'm doing one for running and one for tri's. I don't care about my college/travel/stuff shirts.

SWEET!!!!! They're a little pricey, but even if I paid myself $2 an hour, it'll probably still be cheaper to send it away and have it made than for me to do it myself. Definitely worth looking into. I don't have any non-tri related stuff on my xmas list...maybe I can add this. My parents would love to see that I care about something more than triathlons....and that I am getting rid of some t-shirts (they hate that I own so many and won't part with them). haha.

How is that AARP magazine? Good reading? - j/k . thanks for the advice

I find it funny - from quilter to triathlete. She could write a biography . Just kidding - Janelle, you're great, and it's awesome that you're so well-rounded.

I think this first quilt will include zero tri shirts - I will save them for a later time. I just have sooo many T-shirts I don't want to lose them, hence the reason concert, travel, college, etc. will be in there. I even have some T-shirts that are just cool (neat design or something), but I never wear, so they will go in there too.

I don't do too well starting projects like this that are out of my element, so we'll see how it goes.

LOL...I know, I know. Once I hit 50 I told myself I wasn't going to cave in and subscribe. Actually I think I'm fitter than most of the AARP readers...PLUS I get cheaper rates on hotels (sometimes). You'll be there someday, just wait for it!

You did *not* just call Janelle "well-rounded", did you? Is that better or worse than "tree trunks"?

Back to the OP...I've made several quilts.  Most of them were given away as baby gifts.  I'm very proud of them!

You can make the top yourself, and piece it together, and have someone quilt it for you (fancy stitch the top layer, batting filling, and bottom layer together).  Then put on the binding yourself.  Easy.

Haven't made one for a while- no babies recently in my circle.

I was quilting when I was marathon training, so the running balanced out the quliting if ya know what I mean??  I am a well- rounded person what can I say?  There's nothing wrong with that??

I've only made 2 quilts.  One was a baby quilt (my first one) for my best friend's baby.  The second one I made for my mom.  I've made a few flannel throws which are really cute for b-day/Christmas presents the one year.  If ya'll saw the flannel throws you'd be jealous   Like Lucy said- i was very proud of what I made and it was actually hard to give them away because I spent so much time working on them.   But yeah- my house is interesting.  I have a road bike, mt. bike, set of golf clubs, my old softball gear, a sewing machine, tri stuff....the list goes on.
