I love yoga, it really helps my flexibility and strength...and I've read different things about yoga and running, yoga and tris (it is good for you, it isn't good for you). What's your opinion?

And, do you do yoga one day, and exercise the next, or do you combine them? For example, a really convenient day for me to do yoga would also be a day that I run. I'm wondering if that's the best thing, since yoga does take some strength in certain poses...

Thanks!

I'm not sure how yoga could possibly be a bad thing. I know its helped my flexibility and strength a great deal which, I'm sure, has paid dividends in my other training. On yoga days, I'll usually do another workout, too. Running has seemed to be best for me.

I just started tri training this summer, but I've been doing yoga for 14 years. I can't imagine it would be a bad thing. Flexibility and balance, weight-bearing exercise...what's not to like?

I tend to do a little bit every morning, before I exercise. It's just my routine. Then, if work sucks, I do some at night, too. Take a class every now and again.

Good luck!

I only have time to do yoga once a week (when I do it!) and find it to be a really nice change in stretching out all the stuff that got tight during the week by running, biking and swimming.  Go for it....just don't strain!

I get Yoga DVD's from the library every week, and just pop em in from time to time, often as much as 5x a week. I love it. I fenioetly feel more flexible, it is a nice way to strecth out AFTER a long workout, and I like that it is SLOW and makes me awware of breathing, and where I am holding tension. SO it supprts my tir training for mental reasons too.

I believe TTB and some other tri-books recommend incorporating yoga into your training plan. Definitely a good thing for core-strength, flexibility and balance.

This fall I've usually had a yoga class scheduled during the rest day after my long bike. Some of the poses that work the quads have been challenging but still doable. I will also sometimes go through a few sun salutation routines to loosen up and warm up before an early morning run. That seems to help. I'm fairly new to yoga and still sorting out how it fits into tri training, etc. I found running right after a class to be harder than a brick run, for me.

I love yoga and used to practice daily but don't have time these days    I found that a long run in the morning and a long yoga class at night were perfect complements (tho I'd be tired!).   Other than scheduling they really never seemed to interfere with each other, altho I imagine some forms of yoga like ashtanga could be challenging if you're tired from tri training, and vice versa.

I DID find, suprisingly , that I had more back problems when practicing daily even tho I  had a VERY experienced instructor.  I was in physical therapy and was told that I was actually TOO flexible, my core wasn't supporting me for biking and running.  I don't know if I buy that or not.

(Cindy in that case, I'd work on my core! too flexible? no such thing! how bout strengthening that core to support all that hard work you've done over the years???)

I am a CORE convert. Strengthening my core has all but eliminated my ITB probs....
