1) i remember years ago the spinergy 4 spoke carbon wheels were the "thing to be riding." why doesnt spinergy make them? are the hed 3 carbons significantly better?

2) if i am on a hilly course do the hed 3 and spinergy rev-x have simular disadvantage as a disc? should i just stick with my bontrager race x lite aeros with bladed spokes?

of course i know... its the engine not the bike... but engines the same.......

I think Spinergy still makes a carbon wheel, but it's been redesigned. I just sold a pair of those old Rev-X wheels. Someone told me they were prone to cracking and it would lead to catastrophic failure, but I rode mine for several years with no problems. Occasionally you can still find them on Ebay.

Some used to call them "Snapergys" but I had a set on my TT bike back in the day and they were fast and fine for me. I never had anyone return them after purchase from the shop for carbon issues, only bearing issues sometimes.

But having seen one explode to about a billion shards in a sprint in a 1/2/3 road race about 15 feet in front of me when there was a crash, I would not recommend them for road racing ........ in fact I don't think they are even legal anymore in USCF non TT events.

The problem with limited spoke wheels and a hilly course is flex of the wheel. I could easily cause the Spinergys I had to hit the brake pads in a good sprint or hill. No experience with the Hed stuff, so I can't speak for them.

On a hilly course I'd go more for a deep section rim and at least 16 - 20 spoke wheel. Mavic Cosmic or Zipps. And if it is REALLY rolling, lose the deep section rims and go for a lighter and stiff wheel like the Kysrium SLs.

Do a little Googling and you'll find that they have a bad reputation for imploding at speed...I'll pass, thanks

The issue with discs and tri-spokes (or any relatively heavy wheel)  on a hilly course is that, as rotational mass, you have to accelerate that weight up every hill and added up over an entire bike leg that can mean a lot of wasted energy.  The key is to find a wheel that is both aero and relatively light.  If you the course isn't too hilly and you want to run a disc then you should opt for an all carbon tubular because it has less of its weight in the rim/tire which means it will require less energy to accelerate compared to an aluminum rim and clincher tire which are heavier.

Well you could jsut buy the Zipp 808 for a front wheel. There more aero than any other tri spoke wheel on the market even with an 18 spoke count.
