Subject: My race schedule for 2006
I've just about nailed my race schedule for 2006.  There will be a few local 5k and 10k road races mixed in too.  You might think there are too many "A" races here but consider that I'm looking at a 8 months of racing and 3 "A" triathlons.  I've also found that I really only need a 4-5 day taper for HIM distance.  The Timberman and Colonial are probably a little too close together to both be "A" races but I just can't consider Timberman anything but an "A" race.  Boston, Colonial HIM, and the JFK50 are the keys to my season.

March 19 - Shamrock 1/2 Marathon - training for Boston (B race)
April 2 - Virginia Duathlon - early season conditioning and fun (C race)
April 17 - Bostom Marathon  - I want a PR here (A race)
May 21 - Columbia Oly Tri - Early in the season but I'd like to really test my fitness (B race)
June 25 - MedExpress HIM - Get some more experience at the HIM distance (B race)
July 8 - Diamond in the Rough Oly Tri - Raced it last year (A race)
July 15 - Allen Stone Memorial Run-Swim-Run - Just for fun (C race)
July 31 - Charlottesville Oly Tri - Raced it last year (B race)
Aug 20 - TimberMan HIM - I'm super psyched for this (A race)
Sept 3 - Rock n' Roll 1/2 Marathon - Fun local race (C race)
Sept 24 - Colonial HIM - The most "A" of the A races
Oct 7 - Pinehurst Oly - Great race, fun course (C race)
Nov 18 - JFK 50 - My first ultra...I just want to give it a solid effort and finish respectably

My goodness, that's a number of races. Mentally, I'm only able to save it for two peak races and perhaps 2 B/C races. Keep it up.

Yeah, I agree...lots of races up for 06'.  Good luck with them and make sure you aren't racing too much....which can lead to burnout and injury.  Looks like you have some back to backers.  Really make sure you recover if possible since you are racing almost every week in July.

My thoughts as well!

I'm only focusing on the one race in June. And depending on the results there, then I'll set up number two in the Fall, but not sure if it will be a tri or marathon until after the June race. (Local 5 - 10k's do not count on "focus" races for me, they are thrown in for fun and times).

Looking back at this season I had 4 Olys, 1 HIM, 1 Du, 1 marathon and a bunch of short road races between April and November.  For 2006 I have 4 Olys, 3 HIMs, 1 DU, 2 1/2 marathons, and an ultra...and probably about the same road races.  So I've dropped the marathon and added 2 HIMs, an ultra, and 2 1/2 marathons.  Yep...big increase over last year.  I will definitely consider dropping Charlottesville in July.  The 1/2 marathons are nothing more than a hard workout for me...should only take 1:25 or so and I'll recover in 2-3 days.  The run-swim-run is a short local fun race that really shouldn't have any impact...1000m run, 1000m swim, 5k run. I never felt at all burnt out this season and appear to recover fairly quickly.

So am I just trying to justify the schedule to myself or does it all seem reasonable to everyone?

First off, I'm pretty sure Boston qualifies as a marathon, so I don't see how you've dropped a marathon from last season.  And, clearly, you're trying to justify the schedule.  Laughing

But I'm sure you can pull it off if you want to and you know your body better than anyone.  I'd be interested in what Mike has to say, but I doubt you can realistically get more than 2 or 3 real A-races in a season no matter how long your season is.  Still, I'm sure you'll do well regardless.

Psshhhhhh, easy days. You should be able to do those two back to back

 - (I will be happy the day I can run a 1:25 and still walk afterwards ......)

Oh yeah...forgot about Boston.  I was thinking that I swapped my end of season marathon for an ultra...but I guess I did pick up a marathon in the beginning.  Regardless, I think I can handle everything.  We'll see...2006 will be a big learning experience for me before I set my 2007 schedule and start trying to qualify for Kona.

Only you know how you body adapts to a busy schedule. For me, I'll have one Olympic in June, one HIM in July then INWI in early September. I know from experience that this works for me without breakdown. As long as you remain flexible should some nagging injuries arise - Go for it! I personally hope you complete them all. Look forward to the race reports...
