Can anyone suggest how the time/miles on a stationary bike translate onto the road. I don't spend a lot of time on the bike, usually 20-30 minutes before my runs and swims at the gym. I always come in at 21.6mph, pedaling at level 7. When I ride on the road I'll go about 1-1 1/2 hours and average about 10mph. But I still have yet to figure out how to understand the time spent on the stationary bike and how it relates to my training.
Time spent on a trainer is the same as time spent riding on the road; you get the same benefit. The speeds may be different due to not having any rolling resistance or wind resistance on the trainer and not having to contend with traffic, stop signs or road lights.
I actually find that I go a lot faster on the road, vs. on the trainer. I use a Cybex stationary with aero bars at my gym, and I tend to go about 16-18 mph at 95rpm. On my road bike, I'm usually at 18-25 mph at 95rpm with the same Rate of Perceived Exertion. Sometimes, if I want a good "sweat it out" workout, I'll go to the gym because it seems like there's less interuption, more resistance, and a "better view". ;-)
How long do you train on the cybex bike for a normal cycling training ? Do you simply follow the time set out on the programs that are on this site ? Does anyone know how spin classes translate ? Say a 45 min spin class ?
No I don't like the preset programs. I either 1. do the "manual control" so that I can adjust the "gear" that I'm in to spin at 85-95 rpm or 2. I do the time trial program which still allows me to change gears.
