Subject: sore crotch/shoulders from biking.....
hello!

i took my first very long bike ride yesterday on my new road bike. i have a question for all of the women out there (and the men too, i guess). my crotch (skin) is so sore and so chafed today!! i have biking shorts that seemed to be soft and padded but they didn't seem to help much. will vaseline help or is this just a fact of life on the bike? any tricks/tips out there?

also, during my ride, my back and shoulders got very tight and sore - is it likely that my bike doesn't fit me quite right or is this fairly normal? when i am hunched over, it seems like in order to look forward i am extending my neck too much - could my seat be too high? the seat seems fine in relation to my pedals.

thanks to all!

mary

As for the sore crotch - two things.
1) No underwear with biking shorts. This seems to come up about once a month around here... But it's true.
2) Vaseline helps, as does a product called Chamois Butt'r.

I'll let the more experienced bikers address the shoulders. All I know is that my shoulder feel a lot better after riding aero as opposed to hoods.

1. Verify that your seat is level; it may be angled upward just a bit.

2. The cause of your sore shoulders might be due to hunching over the bars, a common mistake with novice riders. Relax your shoulders when you are riding even in the drops.

It sounds as though you might have a fit problem. Sore buns/crotch and even chafing can be normal, as are sore neck/shoulders. Many of these will disappear as you become more accustomed to riding/long rides. For chafing, Body Glide, the same product you might use to prevent chafing in a wetsuit, also works. If soreness continues, definitely get a bike fitting.

I agree with all of the above. I also experienced soreness and chafing after biking.
I put some antibiotic ointment on the chafed areas and the soreness in my crotch has decreased significantly eventhough my biking mileage has increased. But it did take 3 months to "get used to it".
Sounds like a fit analysis by a bike shop would also be a good investment - just to be sure.

I don't know if you have a women's saddle or not...I found that changing mine helped a ton. Now I can ride for ages.

My wife uses corn starch before and after a ride. she just dumps it in front and back of bike shorts, she says it works, also makes a nice white cloud from crotch area......
