Long time runner making the conversion to a triathlete. A little about me: 40 yo male, been running for the past 12 years, have run 9 marathons, with one more coming up this Memorial Day. After that, I'm going to make the switch to a triathlete (at least I have the running portion down). I think the hardest part will be the swim training. I've been a recreational swimmer, so I'm comfortable in the water. Hoping to try a few sprint tri's late in the summer/early fall to get my feet wet.

Phew 9 marathons! I think you're right about the running. The swimming isn't as difficult as you'll think. It does come quite easily. Well, thats what I found anyway, and I classed myself as a less than recreational swimmer. I'm on a bit of a swimming high at the moment. I swam half a mile yesterday, I could barely swim 100 yards back in January. It can be done.
Welcome aboard and don't be afraid to ask any questions.
Best

Welcome to the site! I'm so jealous of your running ability! That is the worst part for me. I'm sure you'll get the swimming part just fine once you get into it. Good luck with your training!

Welcome, Chris. Marathoners terrify me!! I did one (!!) in December and I still don't think that I've recovered. Don't mind, Ian--he's on Swimming Cloud 9!!

;-)

But, it is true that there is sort of a exponential curve to swimming. It begins really, and then all of a sudden it starts to improve quickly. I hope the Tri-bug gets you as hard as that nasty (o: marathon bug!!

Welcome! Consider yourself 1/3 of the way there for an Ironman! ;-)

Maybe you can give us all a bunch of pointers about endurance running! You will certainly get a lot of info about swimming from the forums!

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome. Any questions on endurance running, let me know, I've read more about it then I care to admit. I would hope that after all these marathons I've learned a few things. I'll trade running advice for swimming advice

Woah!!! You're an inspiration to me. I'm still running 3.5-4 miles as of late. Swimming is also my hardest leg. I'm still only able to swim 50m at a time in freestyle. However, even that is better than when I first started. Plus, there's always breast stroke to rest. I'm swimming about 1000-1200m at a time now. Maybe by the time you can swim a mile, I'll be able to run a marathon!!! Let's go for it!

When i first started running oh so many years ago, i could only do about 10 min. without getting tired. Now it takes me 3-4 miles to shake the legs loose and think nothing of a 12 mile run. I'll work on the swimming, you work on the running and we can trade tips.
