Subject: Bike times
Hello all. Real quick question from a cycling newbie:

This will be my first triathlon. I'm in okay shape. Swim a 30 min mile. Run a 52 min 10k. But I have no idea what to shoot for on the bike becasue I've never raced a bike before.

What would be a middle-of-the-pack time for a 40k bike? And while I'm at it, what are the best resources for bike or tri training? Books, websites, etc...

Sorry if this is a beaten-to-death thread. New to the board. Thanks!

Mid pack cyclists come in between 1:15 and 1:30 for a 40Km. I was looking at the times for a local olympic tri for last year where the winner came in with a cycling time of 1:03:00 and the last place came in with a cycling time of 2:00:05. Your best resources for bike or tri training would be your local bike club and tri clubs as well as a reputable local bike shop. While books and websites will offer you much information, club members are always willing to share their experiences and knowledge directly and explicitly.

Matthew, another thing you can do is go to the web page of the tri you are doing (most have one) and look at the results from last year. That will give you a good sense of what the range is, and you can also see what kind of times people have who finish their swim and run in equitable times.

But in the end, don't let the numbers screw you over--look at the times than do some training bike legs in similar terrain conditions. You should get a sense of what to expect from yourself.

But, always, always!, if you can!!, bike the course before the race!

Welcome, sacco!!
