I am brand new to Tri and I am trying to keep expenses down. Having just started to ride a bike for performance, I wanted a cycle computer. I found a Scwinn for $10.99 at the local Meijer's grocery store. It works great! It doesn't have cadence but it has everything else. Even if it only lasts for a few months, it is at least something to get me started until I see how serious this is going to get.
p.s. The cycle computer sits on top of my $90 bike

Wow, I'm not the only cheapskate here! I ride a used bike that I bought for $60 and I use the same Schwinn computer. Maybe we should start a club.

Right on!! I did my first seven tris (my first two years) with a Glacer Bay (Target brand) Mountain bike I bought for $25. Throw in the Bell speedomenter for $7 and I had a great time. Of course I did start to get quite frustrated watching people only working half as hard as I was (based on sweat rate) passing me. I finally went out and got a decent road bike before my first OLY tri. On longer rides a good bike makes a huge difference, but if you are doing sprints and are looking to enjoy the expirience you can still do pretty well without breaking the bank.

PS. I must say it is also very, very satisfying to beat someone who paid 1000's of dollars more on equipment than you did.

I bought the same one at Wal-Mart for my 30 yr old Schwinnn 10-spd.  Used it for my first year of training & racing.  Worked just fine until I was able to upgrade to my new Cannondale.
