Subject: Wireless vs. wired bike computers
Now that I'm at my one year tri anniversary, I am starting to add to my gear beyond just the essentials. I am entering into the maze of bike computers, specifically with cadence. Is wireless really worth the extra money??

Also, what are some brands/features to look for in a rock solid bike computer.

Thanks for all inputs!

I use the Polar CS200cad. There aren't many computers with HR and Cad in one unit - plus this is wireless. It has been very reliable over the 1000 miles I have put on it - but setup is important (the only problems I have are when the speed sensor isn't in its sweet spot). I haven't experienced any interference from other HRMs, other riders with this unit or with powerlines, etc...

I used to use a wired one, and the only advantage this wireless unit has is a cleaner set-up, at least as far as I know.

Is the set-up for wired more complex more complex due routing it through the bike. Also, what is the price for your Polar?

I'm using a wireless Cat-Eye (sorry I forget the model) and I've had absolutely zero problems with it in 2 years of use. Highly recommended. I really like not having the clutter of the wire on the bike.

call me old school, but I like the wired better. Wireless units have more betteries to change.

I actually have an old school flight deck computer which integrates into the Shimano shifters. I have a single wire that is under my bar tape and then wire tied to the fork. It's really out of the way. I don't have to mess with the cadence wire as the computer calcualtes cadence based on current gear and wheel speed. Also has a stopwatch feature that will track time/distance/speed independantly of the ride time/distance/speed which is really nice for doing sprints or intervals. The lap counter is also nice for this. All controls are in the hoods too, so you don't have to move your hands to mess with buttons.

I do wish it had a HR monitor, but other then that it's a nice computer

i have the wireless cateye (CWD 3000 i think) and it rocks your socks. for those of you that like the placebo affect in regards to aerodynamics, wireless is the way to go, and its SO easy to swap it between bikes.

I also use the Cateye CD300. It is 129 at Performance bike and other places. There is a seller on Ebay that sells them for 89.99. I bought mine and had it within a few days. It works great, has a light for low light situations, and you can see a bunch of info at the same time.

If you plan to ride indoors on a trainer, it's nice to have a computer with a rear wheel sensor because a front wheel sensor doesn't tell you anything when you're on a trainer and only your back wheel is turning.

I persoanally don't think that it is worth the cash for wireless, but if money isn't a concern by all means go for a wireless one. I have used both and maybe I just had a crappy wireless computer but I found that it would miss a turn of the wheel every now and then and my speed would drop for a second. Although wireless computer certainly does have more sex appeal .

I just got a Cateye CD300 a couple of months ago and I love it so far. Got it because it 1) shows lots of relevant info at the same time, 2) displays cadence, and 3) mounts on rear wheel for all of those ultra exciting winter training rides. Easy to set up and about $120 on line.
