Subject: 1st race Sunday!
Ok everyone, my first duathalon is Sunday and after looking at the course map, I'm suddenly nervous! I'm not sure if I'll be able to get there the day before to check out the course, how critical is it to run/ride the course prior? It's only a 3k/17k/3k.

I also have not done any bricks (yikes) and am hoping that I won't die on the 2nd 3K. Is it too close to race day to throw a brick in this week?

Thanks!

its not necessary to ride/run the course i feel...if its on the road, u should at least drive it if u have a map.

about the bricks, u can do them your last week.  just do 1 run/bike and 1 bike/run brick this week...of course at reduced training distances...you should be tapering so dont go the full race distance.  just my opinion.

good luck!

Absolutely drive the bike course. It is always helpful to know what challenges are where on the course. Believe me, there is nothing worse than pounding out miles in the flats only to find yourself at the bottom of a climb right after that. Plus the safety factor of knowing about any strange or tight corners, etc. Definitely great for the peace of mind.
If you do a couple of bricks, make sure you only run long enough to get rid of the "heavy leg" feeling. Any more than that will not help for this weekend but can wear you down.

Most important --- HAVE FUN!!

Thanks for the feedback! My plan is to go early in the morning of the race and check everything out. According to the race website, the run portion is completely flat, while there are "rolling hills" on the bike route. I definately want to check the "rollers" out as the bike is my strength and will be able to really rock-n-roll, but don't want to be surprised with anything.

I'm doing a couple of very low key bricks this week and hopefully that will be enough to carry me through!

Thanks for the support!

Triman50 - I see that this race is in your backyard - have you raced in this before? Now I'm gonna be even more nervous, someone might know me! haha I was gonna be incognito for my first ever race! I just won't tell you what I look like, except from the entry list it doesn't look like too many women are signed up so you'll probably figure I'm one of 10.

See you Sunday!

P.S. How "rolling" are the hills?

Lori - no, have not done the race (but I'm really looking forward to it) and have not driven the course, but I think I will Sat afternoon when I go out to pick up my packet. I'll definitely look for you to say Hello. Good luck!!

COgirl - am doing the brick tonight, just a short easy paced ride/run. Thanks for the encouragement!

Triman50 - I'm not picking up my packet until Sunday - so I'll see you then! This should be fun! What's the weather supposed to be doing up there Sunday?

Lori - I'll know the hills better after Sat., but most of the hills in these parts are similar - rolling usually means long, gradual hills, some a bit more steep than others, but mostly long. The best part is the long ride down. Hoping to hit 35 mph if we get a big enough hill. And the last weather I saw had us at sunny but cooler. S'posed to be in the 80s this week and high 50s by Sunday. I'm planning for a coolish start.
