Subject: Giving Blood and Training

They're having a blood drive at work tomorrow and I've already scheduled a 6:45am appointment to donate a pint. How much of an impact would this have on my training? Should I attempt a 5 mile run after work? What about Thu and Fri? Will I still be feeling the affects? I can probably squeeze in a run after getting home from work and getting ready to SHOUT AT THE DEVIL at the CRUE concert later in the evening!

I've never been so much of an endurance athelete. My past has been mostly spent in the weight room. Donating blood never seemed to have to much impact on weight training and if it did I'd just go light. But weight training never brought me 2-3 miles from home on foot. Has anyone had experience with donating blood and training?

Hey Art,I'll be interested to read what others say on this.I gave blood last week - on Tuesday. I think I still felt the effects when I ran on Thursday, but that could have just been because I'm a wimp. I'm a relatively experienced blood donar, though, and I usually give myself a full day's rest (from running, at least) after giving blood.Hope this helps...and is the beginning to an informative discussion.

When I donated blood, I was told not to exercise that day and then to take it easy for the next few days.  I'm guessing that you should not attempt a 5 mile run after work, especially if you're going to a concert the same night.  Donating blood is a lot of stress on your body.  Give it a rest for a day and then see how you are feeling on Thursday or Friday.  Personally, it was about 3 days until I felt like I was back to normal, but it's an individual sort of thing.

I'm already thinking that planning a run is a bad idea. I'm hoping that others have had a good experience with donating blood and training and will advise that it might be okay for a short run as long as it isn't very intense. If I don't train tomorrow it will be the 3rd day in a row of rest! That's just way to long.

While some people may feel the effects a few days after, there are lots who don't. I am fine the day after I donate blood - the last time I did, I biked for 2 hours the next day and it felt like a normal ride.

Why not schedule a light workout the next day, just in case.. and see how you feel? Maybe an easy ride, a light jog or a short swim? If you start feeling light-headed, slow down or stop.. and chalk it up for experience.

I've done low intensity workouts, swimming, as early as 12 hours, overnight, after a donation. The key for me was to take it easy. Hard efforts were quickly exhausting but going slow, even long and slow, was OK. Eat well and get lots of fluids.

The day of..........any type of running is a recipe to passout and I would not want to take the chance or swimming and passing out. Especially since you swim open water. Maybe a Yoga class or something. I usually take the day off.

During the off-season I try to donate every 8 weeks.  Usually I donate in the evenings after work, so working out that day isn't an issue.  I do usually work out the next morning, and have found it really doesn't affect me other than my pace is slower than usual.  This occurs for about 4-6 days, then it's back to normal.  Maybe since I'm such a frequent donor, my body adapts relatively quickly.  I don't know, I'm not a doctor and don't play one on TV

I wouldn't plan on doing anything that day, except make sure you take in lots of fluid after donation.  You shouldn't have a problem the next day, just take it easy.

I wouldn't schedule anything strenuous for a day or two afterwards.  Don't overthink it though.  If you decide to go out and run, see how you feel and adjust accordingly.  Just don't plan to go set any PR's.

In high school I used to donate blood and then go to basketball practice a few hours later and pass out during sprints...apparently giving blood wasn't a good enough reason to miss a practice. Nowadays I donate and give myself the day off. Giving blood is a great excuse to give yourself a day off.

Well, I'm taking the day off from training today (3rd day in a row) but I really need to get something into my training log soon or I won't be responsible for my actions or the safety of those nearby. I was thinking a swim followed by a run tomorrow morning would be good. I've got two areas condusive to this type of training: 1) Kailua Beach with a 800m OW beach parallel swim and a nice 5k loop run through Lani Kai, 2) Ala Moana Beach Park with a 2Km out and back parallel beach swim and a 5k loop run. I'm starting not to like the 800m swim location since swiming for less than 20 minutes hardly feels worth it anymore. Plus, Kailua water is much more rough and I always drink more seawater there. On the plus side, it is absolutely beautiful in the morning since its east facing. Yeah, I'll go there and maybe double the swim... unless its as windy as they predict which means additional seawater in my diet. In the case of high winds, I'll go to Ala Moana.

Sorry... thinking out loud again.

I have been coordinating blood drives at my office for about 10 years.  I believe you aren't supposed to do any heavy or strenuous activities for at least 5 hours after donating.  However, I normally take the day off from training on the day I donate and get back to training the next day.  And don't forget to drink plenty of water before and after donating.

By the way, it is awesome that you are donating - especially this time of year!  The demand is high and donations drop this time of year.  My next drive is on the 22nd and I am having one heck of a time filling my appointments.

Great job giving such an important gift this holiday season!

I would take the day off, the last thing you want to do it pass out... Although you can get drunk really easliy after giving blood. Me and my cheap firends would always give blood and go for pints in university. We found creative ways to save money

Its all good. I took yesterday off and trained this morning. I felt a little less than myself but got the miles in regardless with decent results. Thanks for all the input.

I'll start another thread regarding the Motley Crue concert.
