Subject: Favorite Christmas Song/Recording

Surprised this topic hasn't been addressed yet, but many of my recent podcasts have featured Christmas (and holidayLaughing) songs, so let's hear what are your favorites.

Without a doubt, the best Christmas compilation of all time is 1987 's A Very Special Christmas, first of a series benefitting the Special Olympics. Every song is strong, highpoints include Bruce and the E Street's "Merry Christmas, Baby," Run/DMC's "Christmas In Hollis," and the Pretenders "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Speaking of the Pretenders, another personal Christmas favorite is their "2000 Miles" off a great Learning to Crawl album.

Another classic Christmas album of the rock era is Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift for You, with artists from his stable circa 1963, especially Darlene Love, and the Ronnettes.

As far as podcasts, I've been sampling different things for the past three weeks, and one music program really stands out as a frontrunner: Brian Ibbott's Coverville, which focuses on cover songs. Every show has been great, and they were recently nominated as a Podcast of the Year. As far as ecletic Christmas tunes, check out volumes 156 and 157, which include songs by animals, various traditional Christmas songs done in the style of Beatles songs, and three covers of Wham!'s "Last Christmas."

Did George Micheal give his heart away to the other guy in Wham?

Yeah, I thought I'd make a couple possum-related comments when I brought that one up, but the censors are on the move today...

But with potential like that presents, who'll censor the censors?

Hands down for me, Mel Torme singing The Christmas Song

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
Dressed up like eskimos
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's on his way
He's bringing lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from 1 to 92
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies
On his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from 1 to 92
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you

"Christmas With Dino" is a sing-along favorite in our family:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002W4TQM/qid=113511...

Even my 14 year old neice loves this! She almost drove my MIL crazy playing it over and over at her house.

For those of you old enough to remember the Dean Martin Show, when my husband and I sing along we pretend to have a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other!

Amen to that, Don.  Its never been done as well as Mel did, either.

Anytime I hear one of the songs from "The Christmas World of Tony Sandler & Ralph Young", I'm instantly transported back to childhood.  Or any of the Fred Waring & the Pennsylvanians recordings, too.  For me, music and Christmas are immutably linked.

The choir's dressed up like eskimos?  I always thought only "folks" dressed up like eskimos.

I would agree that those are among my favs followed by Andy WIlliams.  But, MoTab singing "Carol of the Bells" and Wynonna's "Mary, Did You Know?" are my top two.

All-time best EVER! Interestingly, it is both my husband's and my favourite Christmas song (since long before we ever met!)
