I am looking at doing a triathlon in August ...5 swim, 20m bike, 4 mile run. I am in good running shape but need work on the bike and in the pool. I have a flexible schedule to train. Any suggestions on a training program?

welcome...you should have plenty of time to get up to snuff by august...you tri length is between the sprint and oly (not sure on the swim)...you have some options...u say your in good running shape...see if you can start with the olympic program...that will take u over the distance but you will def be ready.

good luck.

Thanks for your input. I ran a half marathon last week but need work in the pool and on the bike. On the olympic program should I stick to the timed runs of the program or go further? Also, when it says swim for X number of minutes, should I stick with freestyle or do you kick, etc. during that time period?

no need to go down on the run times...keep them to your level now...i would maintain them untill u get used to the 2 new sports before building on the run more.

sorry to be so general but do what you can for the minutes...

many people do drills with short rests between the sets.  it IS good to alternate strokes as its good for overall shoulder and muscle developement.  definitely concentrate on the freestyle but use 'rest' strokes of backstroke, breast-stroke or sidestroke when u get too tired of freestyle...thats how i got ready...by alternating freestyle (hard) with breastroke (easy)...i would switch to breaststroke every 4rth length to 'rest'.  BUT other people will just take a 20-30 sec rest between lengths or laps BUT REMEMBER, come go time, i will have to rely on the freestyle or some combination WITHOUT resting.  so just make sure you plan 'continuous' swims 1-2 time a week.

I am sharing a couple of swim drill routines that I try to complete at least once a week. The other swims are long, continuous...er, continuous as one can get in a 25 m pool!

Warm up: 150 swim
Drills: 4x50 drill pick
4x25 side glide (alternate left and right sides)
Sets: 8x50 fast
Drills: 100 kick < mid strong>
100 kick easy
200 cool down

Warm up: 300 swim
100 kick
100 pull
Drills: 2x25 “it” position
4x25 side glide (alternate left and right sides)
4x50 2-3&glide, 2-5&glide(take 3/5 strokes & glide ~3 seconds on alt sides)
2x50 catch-up
Sets: 5x100 on the 1:45 or 2:00
2x200 on the 4:00
5x50 on the 1:00 (increasing intensity)
150 cool down

The second one has some good speed work. The first one is great if you are pressed for time. Let me know if you have any questions about them. Caveat Emptor!
