...worried that wearing a wetsuit in a public pool will make you look like a complete dork?

YES!!!!!!!!!

i've agonized over this..  but actually i've seen a lot of people recently in my pool with full wetsuits snorkel masks and snorkels doing SCUBA training...  so i'm a dork i'll get over it...  hey if those around the gym think i'm weird its their problem..  i would rather be the weird dork at the gym than flop on race day :-)

I agree - still can't get past that "I look like a dork feeling"

Well, everyone will get used to it and you will become known as "the person in the wetsuit"

You might feel like a dork, but you know you aren't.

I wore my just once to my masters class so I could see how it fit and check for flexibility or chafing (everything was fine) Yea, it felt kinda dorky, but that soon subsided and I wore it as a badge of honor - Triahtlete In Training!

So you look like a dork. Dorks are cool. Dorks are interesting. Dorks are pioneers. It is the rest of us who are out of place.... If anyone there judges you, my guess is it would be someone who is too afraid to do what you are doing.

Forget the sheep, be a wolf! - and when you get into the water, hold your arms out in front of you, fully extended, clap repeatedly and bark like a seal. I guarantee you will have a lane to yourself....

So does that mean you bought a wetsuit, Tim? Or you just want us to look like dorks so you get some kind of sick revenge?

Are you kidding? I have a reputation to uphold now: that fat guy who does not wear a wet suit in ffffreazing water.... The water in South Texas is plenty warm enough now, after about 3 weeks of 80+ weather. (I might see about one for the half IM in September, if it is legal, though...).

That is a good point, though. I was the biggest dork in that race (in more ways than one) and looking back I am so happy that was the case. I'd rather be a dork than a drone any day.

I thought so!

My wetsuit is in the back of some UPS truck right now. I'd wear it in the pool but am afraid with all that extra speed I might plow my head into the wall and wind up watching my race on tv.

I thought the same thing myself. I just got a wesuit last week, and had to take it into the pool. And yes I did get a few looks from the other swimmers, but I have to say that I am glad I did it. I was getting a little nervous about the swim portion of my first tri, but found the bouancy effect of wearing the suit was amazing Now I am looking forward to my first tri on June 5th with confidence knowing that I will not drown.
