I got nuthin - but Welcome to the site anyway!  I'll bet there's someone here who is going to jump in with all kinds of experience!  Check out katfan's thread on murky water over in Triathlon talk.

Start easy and early on the open water swimming.  Parallel to shore just to get the hang of it. If you are doing a wetsuit - (rent one if you aren't sure about buying)  you should have no trouble - you can float the whole way  Good luck and welcome.

It's always best to have someone go along with you if possible, and stick along the shore at first, as malvey suggested. Welcome to the site!

Hey Mesa-

My suggestion (which is what I'll do when I get into the open water part of my training)

What about finding someone to paddle a canoe, kayak, or rowboat next to you? That way you can latch on if you have to, and you're not putting yourself in danger by swimming alone (I'm a former lifeguard, can you tell?).

Try to have someone with you when you swim in the open water, You may experience a cramp, goggles break or who knows. You just don't want to be alone in case a situation arises.
