The savings account is where I want it to be and now it's crunch time to decide on the bike. I can get a great deal on a new Cervelo Dual-The red one with 9sp Ultegra-I know, it's a 2004, but the dealer can't seem to sell his Cervelos, and he'll let it go for $1200. It's comfortable, but a little harsher ride than the...

Guru Cron A'lu, with 10sp 105 and Cosmos wheels. It comes in at $900 more. I'm not a snob when it comes to 105/Ultegra, and I'd almost prefer the tech upgrade of a 10. I don't like the look of the new Duals, and since I'll have this baby for a long time, I want to love it. It must be RED. All opinions welcome.

Oh, both shops are cool, and close by, with equal tune up freebies.

If you forgo the color issue you can get a Specialized Transition Comp with Ultegra and Dura Ace 10 spd with Cosmic Elites (wheels) and Carbon Strykes (aero bars) for around $1800 or so (if you shop around and get a shop to give you a good deal).

I got mine in and built and it is nice!

The best suggestion i can think of is to get your butt on everything you can before you purchase.  Buying a new bike is a ton of fun, but test ride everthing.  When you're done you'll only have a couple bikes that really trip your trigger.  Most importantly, you gotta post up what you're thinking about buying so we can all live vicariously through you.

I can't remember the price range, but you might check out the custom Guru's.  Their sweet bikes and to get one custom made for you would be an awesome thing.

Trust me when I say my butt's been on a ton of bikes. The Guru is custom at $2100, and the thing that sets it apart is it lacks that body rattlin' aluminum feel.

Fit and feel are everything, you're more likely to ride it if you enjoy it.

That said, $900 more would be $2100 (I'm not a math major), which sounds like an awful lot for a 105-specced bike. The LBS here had several Dual Ultegra 10 (slow-colored ) for ~$1450 back in November. Snob or not, Ultegra is going to give you more performance and durability.

I agree with bear although I think the 2005, which is what I have. Is a great deal and I agree with the Ultegra 10 specs will last you a long time.

I would look at the end of year 2005s or go with the slower 2004 Cervelo.

For what it is worth... I had an old super-sport that I used up several years ago.  After a year of deal shopping and riding different bikes, I bought a Giant TCR1.  The bike rode like a dream.  Several friends suggested I see a local bike fit expert.  But, he was going to charge me $150 to fit the bike.  Hey- I thought save the dough and do it myself.

Three months later on a 50 mile ride I developed extreem knee pain.  The culprut was my bike fit.  I took my old bike and my new to the bike fit expert and found out the old bike was actually better frame geometry for me.  Additionally, I have been recovering from knee problems ever since.

Moral of the story:  I wish I had spent $$ on the bike fit expert first - before the purchase.  A good fit is everything.

A 105 bike for $2,100?  That sounds crazy.  With all the cool frames out there, I'm surprised you don't have more options given how much you want to spend.

Oh, and if you don't like the teeth jarring ride of an aluminum frame, why don't you consider carbon?  All3sports has the Kuota K-Factor frame for $1,695 and by adding another $895 you can deck it out with Ultegra 10.  If you're gonna have it for the rest of your life, what's another $400?

I think that you have made up your mind already.  The Cron'Alu is an excellent bike and it will custom ordered for your specifications if you opt to buy it.  As for the 105 components, they are nothing to sneer at.

PS.  I have been deliberating between buying the Cervélo P2SL with DA10 and the Guru Cron'Alu with Ultegra at the end of the month.  The Cron'Alu is 800CND more than the P2SL but it is available in yellow!

Is a trip on the trainer suitable?  Its a tad problematic to really test ride here in the snowy North...

But it's custom geometry at $2100, with better than average wheels, Karl. (Now it sounds like I'm whining) For $200 more I could get Ultegra.

No Carbon! No Carbon! It feels plastic. I'm spoiled by steel.

Michel, you're prolly right. I just like the look of the Guru. The Cervelo is a great buy, but I don't want to be locked into Ultegra 9.

Of course the New QR Kilo is nice. Too bad it's blue. I guess a trip to All 3 Sports is in order. Again.

Yeah, go see Patrick or Alex.  They'll get you fixed up.

And, don't be so quick to dispatch the benefits of Carbon, my friend.  You get used to the feel, and you'll love the increadible lightness of being.
