It's only 31 degrees here this morning and too dang cold to ride. This is just killing me because I got my brand new tri-bike (Fuji Aloha 1.0) earlier this week and am anxious to take her out for a ride. I generally like to wait till it's at least 40 degrees (F) before riding. Am I just a wimp? Does anyone else have any wimpy temperature limits on riding?

You're not a wimp - I don't even ride when it's 40 degrees!!! Hey, enjoy the new bike and I hope the temps warm up for you soon. I don't know where you live, but it's in the 30s today in the Philly area, but supposed to go up into the mid- to upper-50s in a few days (we don't see that too often in Jan). Maybe you'll get the same thing. Enjoy your weekend.

Naaahhh, I haven't even THOUGHT about getting on my bike since our first snowfall a little before Thanksgiving.  Then again, I don't have a brand new sweet ride waiting for me - that might change things a bit... :-)  But no, 30-40 degrees is FREEZING when you're on a bike.  I have no problem running into the single digits and maybe below - but biking?  No thanks!

If it's sunny and the roads are dry I might go out in the mid to upper 30's. 31 degrees plus the wind chill from going 20 mph = pretty freaking cold.

I'm a weather weenie myself, below 50 is too cold for me. As a matter of fact, I'm putting off my weekend ride until tomorrow because it will be 10 degrees warmer.

It's 31 here right now but s'posed to hit 45, maybe 47. I've been watching the weather all week just waiting for today. I can't wait to get in a 25 miler. I wear the same cold weather clothing I wear for running except my biking gloves are heavier, and I wear my Hind felt hat under my helmet because it wicks away the sweat. Just dress for it and you'll be fine.

I ride outside even when its 20 degrees out as long the roads are dry .But thats me .I came to thats sport to enjoy myself and have fun , so if it's too cold out for you that's fine just invest in a trainer . I got one a month ago and I have to say I realy like it .

I will ride when it is in the 20's if the roads are dry.  My long rides are Sunday and every Sunday for the last month there has been snow, rain or ice outside...drat!!. I evaluate every day in my head if this would be a good day to ride outside even though I can't really ride during the week since I get home from work it is dark outside...ah but the days are getting a minute longer each day.  I think I have a riding bug....I drive my bike route from  work home for fun instead of taking the faster way. I'm counting down the weeks until I can start bike commuting....about 8-10 depending on the weather.

You just need the right clothes to ride in colder weather. Plus I think it depends what you are used to. I posted a question back in Sept. about what to wear in the cold weather and got some great advice. I bought some great gear and my favorite Pearl Izumi tights that are wind proof on the front and breathable material on the back keep me toasty. Shoe Covers, good gloves, and some type of hat to wear under your helmet are key for me. I don't even have to layer up as much as I thought I would on my core, since I often get really hot riding and have to take off layers. It is a blast to ride outside in cold weather. My daughter and I went out on Christmas eve...it was fabulous...

Mike, until last year, I would not ride when the temps were below 50.  I went out last year many times at high 20's to low 30's.  I guess I just got used to it. You need plenty of layers, neoprene booties for the feet, and those heater things under your toes.  I just couldn't bare the thought of riding my freakin trainer in the basement.  Plus, any riding outside will be more beneficial than riding the trainer.  Having someone to ride and suffer with is a big help also.  Last Monday, I rode with Maxmattmick at 7am and 29 degrees.  Once you get out there, you will be glad you ditched the trainer.  BTW, I also have a Fuji Aloha '04.

Cheers,

Bmac

Like TRIBAC & KathyG said, put on pleny of cold weather specific biking layers on (I had two), and you're good to go. I just went out this AM at about 31F here in Brooklyn, NY (there were ice puddles to look out for). About a week ago I went riding at night with heavy rain, wind and temps where somewhere in the high 30's(?).......builds character.

With the exception of my skinny, whimpy feet that freeze at the meare thought of 50F or less, I'm all good to go. Got back to the house and was sweating real good by the time I got inside. I think you do get used to it. Besides, I try to avoid the trainer like the treadmill - I'll get bored to tears looking at the wall (regardless of music).

One of my inspirational pictures is one I'm looking to buy of Lance on a mountainous road next to a car with snow all around.

If you get good winter gear you will be fine. Be prepared to pay some serious coin for it though.

I ride indoors on my road bike below about 45 or when it is wet... If it is warm and wet I ride my Mtn Bike outside.
