It's hard to know what to say when events like this happen. The picture of mangled bikes just gives you a sinking feeling.

I guess you can't change fate, but sheesh...cysling on an icy road, where there are cars? Have the Darwin award nominations opened up for 2006 yet?

Soory if that's insensitive, but when you fail to use common sense and all...

Chris Tree - 2006-01-09 4:36 AM The accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on the A547 at Abergele on an icy road in sub-zero temperatures,

My prayers are with them. Cycling is a dangerous sport. It a grim reminder that I try to remind myself before I head out for a ride.

Heh...guess I'm a little more blunt. It's funny, but I posted about Eric Namesnik's car accident. He was passing people in the oncoming lane, on an icy road. Also not the smartest thing to do.

All it takes is one lapse in judgement...

Chris Tree - 2006-01-10 4:06 AM Sort of my point when I said I know we cannot change fate, but lets be careful not to tempt it! But still sad news...

Please see the attached URL link and statement on the veloriders website forum. It looks like there is a great deal of support for the unfortunate cyclists of Rhyll CC and i think it would be a good idea for the triathlon community to participate as well. A number of posts on the forum relate to the fact that this could have happenned to any of us.

Remembrance ride planned
Club cyclists are being encouraged to show their respect this Sunday for
the four riders from Rhyl Cycling Club who were killed.

Julie Dominguez, a member of the Musselburgh Road Club and a contributor
to the chatroom on
www.veloriders.co.uk, said, "We are spreading the
word to all club riders to wear a black arm band on Sunday in
remembrance of those who have lost their lives in such a tragic way."

Since the incident, messages of support have been sent to the bereaved
families from all over the world, among them a letter of condolence from
Cycling Australia's chief executive, Graham Fredericks.

Again, it is a tragedy, but it's interesting how on the message board there's no mention about the not-so-smartness of doing a club ride on icy roads with car traffic.

Is it crass to talk about, on a beginner triathlon forum, where there are assumedly lots of people new to riding their bikes, about how it may not be a smart thing to ride your bike on icy streets, busy with car traffic?

If it is, then I'll keep my mouth shut.

I'm with Jim on this one. Who wants to ride on icy road in freezing temps?
