Subject: new guy here
my name is Ken I live near Toronto
I have been cycling all m life and my brother talked me into doing a tri with him
I have run on and off and not swam on 17 years

I just recently did 60 laps of the local pool in a breast stroke which covers the swim portion of the olympic distance i am doing in september
the bike is coming along and the run sucks

one thing i am having trouble with is that since i am doing all three activities together for hte first time in my life i am not being sport specific enough and the run seems to be suffering the most

any tips?

my first race is june 19 a sprint distance in huntsville northern ontario

First off welcome. 2nd, I here ya. My running is my poorest discipline as well. It's what makes this sport both fun and maddening at the same time. I have no tips really, except to say that you have commiseration at least.

Have you seen a PT or someone? That may help!

Hey, Ken.
If you're having trouble with the run, I'd recommend putting walking breaks into your routine. When training, try running for 5 minutes then walking for a minute. Up the running ratio as you feel more comfortable until you get to 10:1s. Your body recovers nicely, while you're only shaving minutes off your total time. Believe me, your body will thank you.
Another suggestion which seems like common sense but what I forgot to do when training for my first try: practice running RIGHT after getting off your bike. For whatever reason, I kept training these separately, then come race day, I couldn't get my bloody legs to go up and down after going around and round for so long.
Good luck, and have fun!

Good to have you Ken! I am in the same boat as you and Max, with the run being my weakest link, so I can also share in the misery. Incorporating some walking is a good suggestion, though.

Stretch your calves really well before and after every workout (bike, swim, run).  After the run, walk backwards for a couple of minutes.  I've done that for the last year or so and have avoided shin splints - I always got them before.  Just a thought.

Oh yeah, welcome to the site!

whoops, upon re-reading i did miss the fact that u can only run every 4rth day...like a few others mentioned...see a doc or therapist if u can...the only way i got rid of my tendinitis....their may be something specific about u that encourages shinsplints.

i had them once and they really are bummers...i decided to lengthen my running stride all at once...OUCH.
