Subject: Tri shoes-velcro strap clips cranks
I recently tried the Louis Garneau Tri shoes and had to send them back because the velco strap across the top of the shoe attaches to the inside of the shoe and would keep clipping the cranks on my Cervelo Dual.

I've looked at other Tri shoes and unless I want to pay in excess of $150 for high end Sidi's, they all seem to be made with the velcro strap to fasten on the inside of the foot.

Any suggestions on shoes that attach on the outside of the shoe (without spending too much $) or what I can do to prevent the strap from clipping the cranks if I use shoes which attach on the inside of the shoe?

Thanks,
Eric

I have the same shoes and the same bike but I have never had a problem with the shoes coming totally unvelcroed....

I never notice it hitting now.

Specialized - BG Trivent Triathlon Shoe
When three-time Ironman World Champion Peter Reid described his vision of the ultimate tri shoe, we listened, and our collaboration with the planet’s fastest triathlete resulted in the Trivent. Its venting system floods the shoe with cooling airflow, keeping your feet dry & cool no matter how hot the course – even the F.A.C.T. carbon sole is vented and heat reflecting to control temperature. Combined with our patented and scientifically proven Body Geometry ergonomic technologies, the Trivent will ensure your feet are primed and ready for peak performance during the run.

Edit - I'll be getting these myself soon.

That's because they are "Tri shoes".  Tri shoes fasten in the reverse specifically to make it easier to get in and out of the shoe while on the bike in transitions.  If you want the velcro to fasten the other way, just exchange them for a regular pair of road shoes.  However, if you are having a problem with the velcro overlapping far enough that it is hitting the crank, I suspect you have a shoe that is too wide. A narrower cut may solve the problem.

The LGs are wider than other shoes (SIDIs) for instance, so a narrpwer shoe might solve the problem.

But...if you have a narrow foot and are wearing those shoes, you may have a lot of extra strap flapping around once you close the straps tightly. If that's the case, you could probably cut the excess off.

I wear these shoes and just barely don't have that problem.

What kind of cleat/pedal system are you using? I know with speedplays, you can actually slide the entire cleat casing (if you want to call it that) toward the inside of the shoe (instep), which effectively would move the shoe itself, and the strap included, farther away from the crank.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I currently wear the Shimano SH-R098 road shoe with the Look PP206 pedals. My running shoes are the New Balance 833s and Brooks Adrenaline GTS 5s both in width 2E.

I was assuming that since I wear wide running shoes and the Shimano's on the bike (my understanding is the Shimano's are a little wider), I would need a wide Tri shoe and that's why I chose the LGs. I could tell right away that they were roomier than I was used to. I could tighten them but ended up with excess strap hanging off the edge of the shoe causing the problem of clipping the cranks. I'm thinking I don't need such a wide Tri shoe. I'll search the forum for recommendations.

I have Carnacs and Specialized...no problem with either. Specialized fit me much better for longer Tri.
