Hubby and I are planning a move later this year.  Austin is our 1st choice, but we don't know if he can get a job out there. He needs to be in a medium to large sized city with a big hospital. Where are some other TX cities we should consider?

How big a hospital? I'm in Beaumont. Work for a flight program at a level III trauma center (functions as a level II though with 24/7 trauma and neuro) with about 500 beds, cath lab, ICU's for trauma, neuro, CV, medical, quasi-pedi ICU (two intensivists), 30 bed ER.

Beaumont isn't a tri town per se as there aren't races here currently, but we are a reasonable drive from many paces to race. And there's a growing community of triathletes here. I meet at least one person every week or two it seems who wants to race ths year. PM me if you all need more info. Good luck.

Dallas. Clear Lake/Houston/Katy. I think Katy has at least 2 races a year, then others around the city. I personally like the Clear Lake area better than Katy though, however its farther from Austin. Freeswimmingfish will know more though.

Huh...I don't know anything.

Well, I do live in Katy, and there is a great sprint and an oly distance race here, plus there are several that are very close. I have never travled more than 30 mins away for a race, coz they are so close. Nothing longer that an oly though, no HIM or IM.
Katy is a great cycling community, I am riding with a great group right now, and I am about to start riding with another that is tri friendly. I know of 4 differant cycling clubs that I could ride with, and leave from my house on bike to get to. It is common to have 2 or more clubs ride the same route, makes for a large ride, sometimes over 100 riders.
Plus we need more husband and wife teams.
Oh yea, there is a new hospital being built right now in Katy. I dont have any info about it, but I will see what I can find out.

See?? Yes you do! I meant that you would know more about the events on that side of town than I do.

The Galveston 1/2 and the IronStar (right?) 1/2 are close enough too. About an hour away.

Houston! The Texas medical center is HUGE. Many large hospitals, many good jobs, real estate is fairly affordable, the people are great. I NEVER thought i'd live in HOUSTON of all places on earth, but now that I'm here I've made myself a life and enjoy it.

Go to houstonracing.com and click on their calendar to get a sampling of local races -- all of those will be within an hour of you if you live near middle of town. Plus, any race in Austin, San Antonio, or anywhere in the Texas Hill Country is within a 3-hour drive. That's really just one night in a hotel or at a friend's house, race, and be glad if you have a buddy to drive you home. And, a bunch of GREAT BT'ers live around here. Check out THIS forum for the rides at Memorial Park (Houston) and the Houston marathon and half-marathon this past weekend, just fer instance!

ONE MORE: much of Louisiana is here already. Plenty of good Cajun food, music, people.

Houston has it!

San Antonio is a nice town and is a lot cheaper to live in than Austin. And it's as close or closer to all the cool stuff to do in the hill country.

Houston is really great too. I like it a lot, but all the fun stuff I do involves driving toward Austin or SA. Stronger LA population here than in those to cities, though. You can probably find almost all of the cajun stuff that you like somewhere around here.

Uh-oh. The crime would be new. For a big city, it's actually been pretty low overall.

Cajuns aren't new. The clubs and restaurants and, heck, the Cajun Bandstand radio program on KPFT were already here before last year's events. We just have MORE of y'all now!
