Subject: Seat tube angle
As I'm continuing to look at bikes, I'm finding myself encountering discrepencies in seat tube angle.

I've heard that 76 is a realxed angle geared towawrds road bikes and no so much an aero bar set up, but that it is better for steady spinning vs, pushing.

I've heard that 78 is more agressive and geared towards TT bikes, but that it is a sprinting geometry and not great for endurance events.

Then I hear of the elusive 80* frame that only the pros and those with a death wish dare ride.

So besides telling me to "go ride them and decide" does anyone know what the deal with seat tube angle is?

I'm still heavily considering that specialized transition expert as it is priced very nice for the components it has, but it is a 76.5* tube and from what I've read, more of a relaxed geometry bike.

I don't want relaxed geometry. I have my Lemond for shallow seat tube angle. I want something that is going to stick me up in the aero position

Road bikes are not 76, they are 73 - 75 typically. Almost all the tri bikes out now are 76 - 78 (with the ability to use a flipped seat post to go more aggressive).

Back in the '90's there were a lot of bikes around the 80 range as that was the trend and everyone thought it was beneficial.

Newer UCI rules have a limit to the distance the front of the seat must be behind the centerline of the bottom bracket. This makes most pro cycling bikes around the 75 range for their TT set-ups. Tri pros do not have this restriction so they work with whatever works best for them.

I have the '05 Transition Comp (equivalent to this year's Expert) and the seat tube is 76 and with the right bar position I can get pretty darn aero.

I'm going to do some photos soon showing my position on my road bike and my tri- bike so people can see what the difference is in my case (and to show off my toys more! ).

awesome. I'd be very interested to see that. How do you like the transition? I'm very close to picking it up, but I just found out Lemond has started making Tri frames and from the looks of them they are super bad ass.

Well, the only thing I've done with it besides tweaking the aero bars some is to stare at it as I ride the TCR on the trainer!

Could have used it today though as I rode outside and it was hellacious wind in my face for about 20 miles ...... ;-P

I'm not even going to get onto it and start messing with my position seriously until March (after my mid-training 1/2 marathon in the first week of the month).

Guys, don't we waste enough of our work time on these boards?  This is our time, what are we doing here?

Between shoveling snow and swimming I've already had two workouts today, so I think I'll go in the basement and spin for a while.  Care to join me?

well i decided by not making the decision myself. Instead I'm going custom.

I've decided that as soon as I can wrangle the money together I'm ordering a Yaqui Mariola and letting Ves figure out the geometry
