Hey all I am new to triathlons, well sort of. I did my first one last weekend. I finished well, 10th out of 60 women. I come from a swimming backgroud. I swam through college so I think the swim is way to short in these things. I just need to keep working on my running. I have found most people are either good swimmers, or runners but not both. Well I will just need to work on that! I am doing a 4 more tris this summer. My next one is in Owatonna MN, at the end of May.

Later,

Mindy

You know, you're the second person this week who I heard make the comment about swimmers and runners.  <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>  Welcome to the site Mindy.  Congrats on a great triathlon finish.

Hi Mindy and welcome! I live in Hastings, so only about an hour from you. Congratulations on your race finish--very impressive! I was considering the Owatonna Tri, but decided to go with one in Buffalo on June 6 instead for my first race. Even one extra week might let the water warm up just a little bit more around here! What other races are you doing this season? I'll be at the Lake Waconia (6/27) and Lifetime (7/17) races, and most likely the St. Croix in Sept.

I certainly fit the pattern you noticed--fairly decent swimmer (although certainly not college level) but can not run worth a darn! I hate running! I would also love it if the swim was longer and the bike or run shorter!

Kelly

So Mindy,

Where does that leave us who are horrible at swimming, biking and running?

Welcome. Good luck this tri season!

Thanks,
There has to be one of the three that you are better at than the other two. Or maby one you enjoy more? I would rather swim 5 miles than run 1, but that is just me.

good luck on your up coming races.

I guess that is what makes doing a triathlon so cool. Not many people can say they are great at all 3 events. Always have something to work on.

Good luck on your first sprint tri. I have one May 29, the water may still be chilly in Owatonna MN also!!

Hi Mindy

I live in Rochester also. Good luck with your season. Planning out 4 races in your first year is certainly jumping in with both feet. Where do you swim in town?

You're a brave woman for signing up for Owatonna. Do you own a wetsuit?

Welcome Mindy - Too short?? Yikes - for me the bike is just right, the run is too short and the swim ... well I might just float it out   ) But hey... next year I might be a swimer. This year I've got courage.

I swim at the rec mostly, but I do swim one day at the Y to help another guy with swimming. I do own a wetsuit, but it will have to be darn cold before I wear it. I bought it for the duluth adventure race at the end of the summer where they require one. The owatanna swim part is so short, all the 10 sec i save with a wet suit would be lost with my 1min fight to get the darn thing off. You doing that one?

Scott,

Thanks

Hum, an Ironman I don't know if I could do one of those ever! I don't like to run, and the thought of doing a marathon after 112 miles of bikeing and 2.4 miles of swimming dosn't sound like much fun to me. Kudos to those who are Ironman finshers!

Actually Mindy, I can tell you from experience that after doing the training needed to complete the distance, all I could think of is that I "only" had a marathon to go!  Strange to have that point of view, but I remember thinking that as I started my run.

I wasn't really thinking of the time savings with respect to the wetsuit, I was thinking purely of the warmth it will provide. From reports I've heard from people who have done Owatonna the water temp can be as low as the mid 50s. Even if you don't plan on using it, I'd bring it with anyhow and dip your toes in the water before you make a final decision. I am not doing Owatonna but may end up driving over to spectate. If I'm there I'll be easy to spot. I'll be the guy with the 2 year old twins who will most likely be heard before being seen.

Is it Nick Langer that you are helping?

I swim at the Y two days per week @ 11am. The days are mixed based on whether or not I'm working. I talked with Nick briefly after fool's five and he mentioned that he had some people he was working with on his swim. I know he mentioned Dawn Johnson (whom I have met) and someone else whose name I didn't recognize (you, I'm assuming).

What races do you have planned after Owatonna?
