Subject: green tea
I've been reading a lot lately about green tea and all of its many benefits. Co-workers are trying it and love it. I don't like to drink tea and have seen green tea pills on the market...does anyone know anything about these pills? Do you get the same benefits? I'm guessing they are safe? Anyone know anything and care to share?

The green tea thing is just a fad in my opinion. Ya, it's benefitial but will it really boost your performance, no. Will it put years onto your life, not really. There's plenty of other drinks that are filled with antioxidants, like coffee, grape juice, ANY kind of tea drink, wine....If you always follow the hype about all the products out there you'll be spending hundreds of dollars more a month and the effect it has on your performance will be at best, marginal. So if you like green tea, great drink it, if you don't, don't bother going out and buying conscentrated doses of it in capsule form, it's not worth it.

its just a fad. really, 4000 years of consumption? 1,306,313,812 chinese drinking it at every meal? bah. what do they know?

i LOVE green tea. most folks i know who don't like it, dislike the bitter taste. this taste only comes from using boiling water. if you use water between 160-180, its WONDERFUL. you can also reuse the same leaves several times to get the most from the leaves. there is an amazing tea store here in st. paul called the tea source. they have some amazing green teas. (http://www.teasource.com) personally, i LOVE green tea with mango. my husband likes green tea, but only certain kinds. you can get a tea source green tea sampler and see what you like. the tea will be much better quality than anything you can buy in bags.

here's a good article discussing some of the research using the tea: http://www.ourstolenfuture.org/NewScience/oncompounds/dioxin/2003/2...

i don't know what research has been done comparing brewed tea with the supplements, but if you really don't like drinking the tea, the supplements might be worthwhile. if you're just looking for a supplememt high in antioxidents, i'd try this: http://www.greenfoods.com/products/green_magma.html

i drink the lipton iced green tea that you make like regular iced tea.

but my favorite is the Arizona Green tea with gensing and honey that they sell at most convient stores. It is awesome. i would much rather have that than a dr. pepper. You should try it.

I've been drinking green tea for years. Keep in mind - the benefits that the Chinese have enjoyed from it come from repeated use of tea over years. I don't buy that popping a pill will duplicate the effects. You're better off taking a multi-vitamin if you don't want to drink it.

I have to roger what autumn said. Lots of different types. I usually keep 3 or 4 different varieties on hand. Sometimes I toast the leaves in a dry skillet before brewing - it lends a wonderful flavor. A suggestion to you is to go to a sushi place and order a cup. If you don't like sushi, find a Benihana's or some Japanese style steakhouse. When you have a properly prepared cup, you may change your mind. The best tea I have is prepared by a restaurant near me in an ethnic neighborhood. The owner is quite friendly and has sent me home with some leaves in the past.

No fad here.  It's got legitimate studies backing it, and is far more healthful than those other drinks listed.

kate, check out the tea source. amazing stuff. i actually kicked my coffee habit for a good year thanks to those teas (okay, so i eventually got back on the bean, but still...the tea is amazing). precious eyebrows is a very good green. green tea with mango is awesome. if you like earl grey, earl green is also very good. etc. my current favorite is actually a black tea blend of high quality black tea, organic peppermint, and rose hips which they call three brothers. amazing!

Another great tea source is adagio teas at www.adagio.com. They have literally dozens of teas and all the brewing info and tools you need. They include red teas and some herb teas as well.

Actually, most, if not all, of the benefits of green tea are equally there with black tea. They are just now studying them and it turns out the anti-oxidants.

I'm getting hooked on having tea every afternoon instead of diet soda.

That's because all different flavors of tea come from the same tea leaves, it's just a matter of the process by which the tea leaves are prepared.

That could be due just to the fact tha tea has caffienne (unless it specifies caffeinne free)
