Is that dog old?  Looks like it has cataracts.

Oh, and we have two lab mixes.  Lots of energy if that's what you're looking for.

Well, don't get a yorkie, they have tons of energy for playing but can't run more than a couple blocks.

Just sayin'

I'm hearing all these recommendations for labs...any of you have labs with hip problems? That would be one reason I would shy away from them as a running partner.

My dog (seen left) is a pit/boxer/lab/whoknowswhatelse mix. She chimes in at 45 lbs and before she busted her knee up, she was a great exercise partner (Edit: her knee did not get busted while waking/running with me- it was a 90 degree turn at full speed after a squirrel that tore a ligament). If you were to go to a resue agency or the local pound, you can probably tell then what you are a looking for in a dog, and they would have a recommendation for you. My friends have a shepard mix they go for her ability to be a running partner. So far, so good.

Oh, and I think it's been mentioned in other dog threads...something about waiting for a dog to be over a year before you do any serious distance running with them (over 1-2 miles). Someone who knows, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck finding your new dog to spoil!

I had an Alaskan Malamute, and he loved to run, but not great for distance
running. I now have 3 Husky's that love to run. Also, great if you are doing your
shorter speed workouts. If you decide on the Malamute....Please dont ever take it
running off leash!!!!!!

Weimaraner ..... great dog for both endurance and speed (like the GSH).

What kind of family dogs are Weimaraners? I just think they are so beautiful! Are they good with kids (5 and 8)?

Beautiful!

I have 2 dogs, a miniature pincher (2 yr) and a Border collie (5 months) I have always ran with my min pin, but she can't do more than 5km. But she goes fast! She is always pulling me, trying to get me to go faster.

We got the Border collie for the purpose of longer distance, but that is still a gamble, for she does not have the discipline yet.

I have a 12 year old Lab and she was a good running partner until she blew out her knee. Since then her other knee blew and now she likes to go for 1-2 mile walks with the family. My brother has two labs that can easily do 12 miles though.

Careful of the Alaskan Malmute. It's a sled dog and would be a great winter partner but you'd kill her/him on a warm day. I have a Lab and until recently she has been a great running partner. She ten now and has gotten arthritis in her hips, so it down to a quick 2 miles, drop her off at home, then complete my run. Plus, if you have ever seen a young lab, they have way too much energy. A good long run makes them easier to have around the rest of the day!

Love my Lab,
Jay

Doggie Durathons=Hunting Trials

If you ever get a chance go and watch one of these. Those dogs are unreal. Run, Swim, retrieve, just cool to watch.

Good Luck,
Jay

I've been a vet tech, so have seen all sorts of dogs come through. Id say steer away from German shepards, too many hip problems. Depending on breeding, labs can have many hip problems as well. My lab will run about 8 miles, and then he's done. He'd rather swim. I'd say go for either a mutt at the local humane society, one that looks strong but sleek and agile. Stockier tends to not be so great for longer runs. Or a Weimaraner, Viszla (sp??) or something in the "working" group of dogs. Have fun!! Check out the AKC website to see all sorts of breeds you never knew existed.

Wow thank you all for your posts! Well we have decided the Malamutes are out, according to what we have read (and this is not individual dogs but breed spec. of course) they are not the best around kids. We are in VA and it might also get too hot in summer. I'm glad someone brought up the age thing with our current dog. Luckly she is still very active and happy, just can't run far. I took her out last spring and had to turn around after about a mile she sounded like she was going to have a heart attack... She's also good with other dogs once she gets to know them a bit. My Dh has his heart set on a shepherd, but I have had labs too and both were great, my only requirement is that it is a female, just had better luck with them around the kids. Not so many dominance issues. Hoping to look this weekend. Thank you all for your input it really helps! And what beautiful pics! luv em.
