The most important thing is to have fun. If you think of it as a series of shorter rides, rest stop to rest stop, you keep those depressing thoughts like .."I still have 45 miles to go"... out of your head. Have fun, tag onto different groups of riders, talk to people, and enjoy. After all its not a race.

Don't go to fast over the first half. I did my first century ride a few years ago. The Hotter then Hell in Texas. It's in August when it's about 110 degrees. I rode like a bat out of hell for the first 70 miles then bonked. It took me just as long to finish the last 30 as it did the first 70. Take your time and stay hydrated!

Grab someone's wheel who is going just a shade faster than you think you can ride for the duration, then hold on.

Yup, exactly what you should do. I did that for a friend and promised her if she held on that she would be under 5 hours riding time. She was having "female problems" and felt terrible towards the end. To make our goal I was going to have to move out, so I told her to hold on ...... I averaged right around 28 mph for the last 10 miles to get us under the goal, and she held on!! Ahhhhh, those were the days! (That ride I really consider the peak of my bike fitness as I was still fresh after the century and actually thought about going out and doing the loop again).

And don't stop long at rest stops! That will just drain you more. Be there long enough to grab some grub and refill your bottles.

This is a little late, but if you went up sugar loaf, Hopefully you crushed it! I found it very over-rated when I went up it during the Clermont HIM. I'm know you crushed it!!

Went up Sugarloaf and never got out of the saddle. It was awesome for me.
It was the baddesta$$ hill I have ever been on, (it's flat where I live).

I did love the hills in central Florida. Our group will be going back to do some rides on our own.
